Dental Implants in Turkey from South Africa: planning two trips

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth and can support a crown, bridge or denture. It is surgical treatment, it is not risk-free, and it is not a one-visit job: the implant needs time to heal into the bone before the final teeth are fitted. For anyone looking at dental implants from South Africa, that healing gap shapes the whole plan.

In short: Dental implants in Turkey usually mean two trips: one to place the implant and a second, at least three months later, to fit the crown. Plan both trips before you start, ask for a written plan naming the dentist, the implant system and every stage, and bring your records home so a dentist in South Africa can look after the implants.

Who dental implants suit

Implants may suit you if you have one or more missing teeth, healthy gums and enough jawbone to hold an implant, or are suitable for bone grafting if not. You also need good general health, careful oral hygiene and patience with the healing period.

Suitability is confirmed only after a dental assessment with X-rays or scans. If implants are not right for you, the dentist should explain alternatives such as a bridge or denture. Smoking matters too: damage or failure caused by smoking is excluded from our guarantee.

Single implants, several implants or All-on-4

The right technique depends on your anatomy, how much bone you have lost and what you want to achieve. The options include:

  • Single or multiple implants, each supporting a crown or a bridge
  • All-on-Four, a full-arch restoration on four implants
  • All-on-Six, an extended full-arch restoration on six implants
  • Mini implants, which may be considered where there is bone loss

Some patients need a bone graft or sinus lift first, which can change the timing. If your teeth only need a cosmetic change, see our veneers guide. Implants are explained on the dental implants page.

Two trips, with months in between

On the first trip you have an X-ray scan, meet the dentist and the implant is placed, a procedure that generally takes around two to three hours. The implant then needs to bond with the bone and the gum needs to heal. The crown is fitted at a later appointment, at least three months after the implant goes in, and only once the dentist confirms the implant is stable.

From South Africa, that means two long-haul journeys. Before you commit, plan both:

  • Flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir
  • South Africans need an e-Visa for each trip
  • Ask how many days each trip needs, and leave room for an extra appointment
  • Ask the treating dentist to confirm in writing when it is safe to fly after the first stage

Ask any provider, in writing, for the name of the treating dentist, the implant brand and system, the number of implants, whether grafting is planned, and every stage of the plan. Our dentists are listed on clinic facts.

Risks to know about

Implant placement is surgery. Possible problems include pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, delayed healing, an implant that does not integrate with the bone, gum or bone loss, nerve irritation, sinus complications and the need for further treatment. Careful planning reduces risk but cannot remove it.

Looking after implants in South Africa

Implants need daily cleaning and regular check-ups for life, so you will need a dentist at home:

  • Ask for a written record naming the implant brand, system and components, plus your X-rays or scans, so a South African dentist can maintain them
  • Tell your dentist at home before you travel, and book a check-up for after each trip
  • Remember that Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa, which makes remote follow-up easy to arrange
  • Do not rely on standard travel insurance: it usually excludes planned treatment abroad

Our treatment guarantee covers dental implants for one year from placement and crowns for one year from fitting. Covered treatment is carried out in İzmir; flights and accommodation are your own cost. How complaints are handled is published on our complaints page.

What we will not do

We will not place implants before you have seen and agreed a written plan, and we will not fit the crown before the dentist confirms the implant has healed.

Frequently asked questions

How many trips to Turkey do dental implants need?

Usually two. The implant is placed on the first trip, and the crown is fitted at a later appointment, at least three months after placement. The exact number of visits depends on your plan, so ask for it in writing before you book.

Can I have All-on-4 implants in Turkey?

All-on-Four and All-on-Six full-arch treatment are offered, as are mini implants for some patients with bone loss. Which technique suits you depends on your anatomy, how much bone you have and your goals, and is decided after a dental assessment.

What decides the cost of dental implants?

The number of implants, the technique, whether you need bone grafting or a sinus lift first, the type of crown, bridge or denture, and what the package includes, such as accommodation and transfers. A firm figure is only possible after a dental assessment.

Can my dentist in South Africa look after implants placed in Turkey?

Yes, for routine care. Bring home a written record naming the implant system and components, and your X-rays or scans, so your dentist knows exactly what was placed.

Will my medical aid cover dental implants in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective dental treatment abroad. Ask your scheme before you travel and do not assume anything will be refunded.
