For patients in South Africa
Composite Bonding in Turkey from South Africa: the conservative option, honestly explained
Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin, shaped directly on the tooth, to repair chips, cracks, worn edges and small gaps, or to even out the shape and colour of a few teeth. In most cases little or no healthy enamel is removed, which makes it one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments there is. This page explains when bonding is the right choice, where its limits are, and what South African patients should plan around it.
In short: The bonding itself is usually done in a single appointment, and the teeth can be used straight away. It typically lasts 5 to 10 years before it needs repair, polishing or replacement, and it can stain over time. If you want a smaller, more conservative change, ask whether bonding would do before agreeing to veneers.

Bonding or veneers?
Both change the look of the front teeth, but they work differently:
- Bonding is built up in resin on the tooth, usually with little or no enamel removed. It suits small corrections and can often be repaired or redone later.
- Veneers are custom-made shells bonded to the front of the tooth. They suit bigger changes in colour and shape, but usually involve more preparation of the tooth.
If your concerns are minor, ask whether bonding could achieve them first. If you are already weighing up veneers, our veneers guide for South African patients covers the questions to ask. The treatment is described on the composite bonding page, and our dentists are listed on clinic facts.
Who bonding suits
Bonding is suited to chipped, cracked, worn, discoloured, uneven or slightly misshapen teeth, and to small gaps. It is not the answer for heavily damaged teeth, large changes in colour across the whole smile, or problems that need orthodontics. Gum disease and decay need treating first. The dentist confirms suitability after an examination.
What the appointment is like
Because there is little or no preparation of the tooth, bonding is usually painless and often needs no local anaesthetic. Treating several teeth makes the appointment longer, but it is still usually completed in one visit. You can eat with the bonded teeth straight away.
The trip from South Africa
A single appointment does not mean a single day in Turkey. Allow time for the assessment, any treatment needed first, and a check once the bonding is done. For planning:
- Direct flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, then a short domestic flight to İzmir.
- South African passport holders apply for a Turkish e-Visa before travelling.
- Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa, so jet lag is not a factor.
- Travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad, so check your policy wording.
Looking after bonding in South Africa
Composite resin can stain from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and edges can chip if you bite hard objects. To keep it looking good:
- Brush twice a day, floss daily and keep up regular check-ups with your dentist at home
- Avoid biting ice, pens or fingernails
- Ask your dentist about occasional professional polishing
- Bring home a written note of which teeth were bonded and the shade used, so a dentist in South Africa can repair it to match if needed
What our treatment guarantee covers, and what it does not, is set out on that page. How complaints are handled is published on our complaints page.
What we will not do
We will not recommend veneers or crowns where bonding would meet your goals, we will not bond over decay or untreated gum disease, and we will not start before you have agreed the plan.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in Turkey for composite bonding?
The bonding itself is usually done in one appointment. Allow extra days for the assessment, any treatment needed first and a check afterwards; the dentist confirms the schedule.
Does composite bonding damage natural teeth?
In most cases little or no healthy enamel is removed, which is why bonding is one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments.
How long does composite bonding last?
Typically 5 to 10 years with good care, before it may need repair, polishing or replacement. It can stain from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.
What decides the cost of composite bonding?
The number of teeth treated, how much each needs, any treatment required first, and what the package includes. A firm figure is only possible after a dental assessment.
Will my medical aid cover composite bonding?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic dentistry or treatment abroad. Ask your scheme if you are unsure.
