What is ilasik? – Advanced Eye Surgery Explained

iLASIK is a marketing term commonly used for a customised, flap-based LASIK pathway that may combine wavefront-guided planning with a femtosecond laser. The name does not establish that it is the safest, most accurate or best option for an individual.

How it differs from other procedures

LASIK reshapes the cornea beneath a flap. PRK reshapes the surface without creating a flap, while SMILE uses a different small-incision approach. The available procedure and device depend on prescription, corneal anatomy, eye health and local approval.

Suitability assessment

A comprehensive examination should review prescription stability, corneal thickness and shape, tear film, pupils, retina, glaucoma or cataract, health, medicines and previous surgery. Custom measurements may guide treatment but cannot guarantee accuracy or outcome.

Risks and alternatives

Risks include dry eye, glare, halos, double or blurred vision, light sensitivity, flap or healing problems, infection, under- or over-correction and further treatment. Rarely, reduced vision can be permanent. Alternatives include glasses, contact lenses, PRK, SMILE or no surgery.
