PRK Laser Eye Surgery: Suitability, Risks and Recovery
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is laser eye surgery that removes the corneal surface epithelium before reshaping underlying corneal tissue. The surface then heals. It may correct selected prescriptions but cannot guarantee spectacle-free or perfect vision.
Suitability
An eye surgeon should assess prescription stability, corneal shape and thickness, dry eye, pupil size, retinal health, medicines, pregnancy where relevant and visual or occupational needs. Glasses, contact lenses, LASIK, SMILE or no surgery may be alternatives.
Risks and limitations
Possible risks include pain during early healing, infection, inflammation, haze, scarring, dry eye, glare, halos, under- or over-correction, irregular corneal shape, loss of best-corrected vision and further treatment. Recovery and follow-up
Vision can fluctuate while the surface heals. Drops, contact-lens bandaging where used, reviews, driving, screens, swimming and exercise follow individual instructions. “Fast response,” fixed recovery and universal outcome claims do not replace urgent clinical access for severe pain, increasing redness or sudden visual loss.
