Tummy Tuck After Major Weight Loss: Results and Risks

A tummy tuck after major weight loss can remove selected excess abdominal skin and may repair abdominal-wall separation. It cannot remove every fold, stretch mark or scar, and it does not replace weight management or guarantee a particular body shape.

Timing and assessment

The surgeon should review weight stability, nutrition, anaemia risk, health, medicines, smoking, previous bariatric or abdominal surgery, scars, skin distribution and future pregnancy plans. Further weight change can alter the result. Circumferential or staged body-contouring procedures may be considered when excess skin extends beyond the abdomen.

Procedure and limitations

Mini, full, extended and circumferential operations use different incisions. Liposuction may be combined for selected fat but does not reliably tighten substantial loose skin. Before-and-after photographs should be viewed with consistent lighting and timing and cannot predict an individual result.

Risks and recovery

Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound separation, delayed healing, skin or fat loss, numbness, contour irregularity, asymmetry, visible scars, blood clots, breathing problems, anaesthetic complications and revision.
