Liposuction Techniques: Choosing a Method Safely
Liposuction technique should be selected after an individual assessment, not from a ranking of a supposedly “best” method. The treatment area, fat distribution, skin quality, health, previous surgery and surgeon’s plan all affect the choice.
How techniques differ
Conventional suction-assisted liposuction removes fat through a cannula. Power-, ultrasound- or laser-assisted approaches add a particular form of energy or motion. A device name does not prove that one method is more effective or less risky for every patient.
Assessment and alternatives
The surgeon should assess weight stability, skin laxity, asymmetry, medicines, smoking, blood-clot risk, anaesthetic needs and expectations. Alternatives may include no procedure, lifestyle support, a non-surgical option or a different operation when excess skin is the main concern.
Risks and recovery
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid imbalance, contour irregularity, asymmetry, altered sensation, scarring, skin injury, blood clots, fat embolism, anaesthetic complications, dissatisfaction and revision. Recovery varies with the area and extent; only the treating surgeon can advise about garments, work, exercise and travel.
The NHS liposuction guide describes the procedure, recovery and important complications.
