Dental Implants and Veneers: South Africa or Turkey?

Good dentists work in both South Africa and Turkey, so either country can be the right place for dental implants or veneers. The country matters less than the written plan: the materials and brands, the number of visits, how much healthy tooth is kept, who looks after the work at home and what the guarantee covers. Dental implants in Turkey usually mean two trips from South Africa, so build that into your decision from the start.

In short: Whether you are looking at dental implants in South Africa or veneers in South Africa or Turkey, compare written plans, not headlines. For implants, the implant needs at least three months to heal into the bone before the final crown, so most South African patients travel twice. Veneers usually take one stay of five to seven days. Ask whether each tooth gets a veneer or a crown, and bring home a record your South African dentist can work from. Our guides to dental implants in Turkey and veneers in Turkey cover the details.

What decides the cost of implants and veneers

We do not publish prices or compare price tags between countries. Two quotes are only comparable when they describe the same treatment, and a figure means little until a dentist has seen your X-rays or scans. After a free online consultation you receive the price in writing, together with the plan it covers. In either country, the cost depends on:

  • How many teeth or implants are being treated, and with which technique: single implants, a bridge on implants, or a full arch such as All-on-4 or All-on-6
  • Preparatory work such as bone grafting, a sinus lift, gum treatment, fillings or root canal treatment before anything cosmetic is done
  • Materials and brands: the implant brand and system, and the material of the crowns, bridge or veneers
  • The number of visits and how long each stay lasts
  • What the package includes, such as accommodation, airport transfers and transport to appointments
  • Aftercare and guarantee: what happens if something needs attention after you are home

From South Africa, also count what a Turkish quote does not show: flights, time off work and, for implants, a second journey.

Dental implants: plan for two trips

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth and can support a crown, bridge or denture. Placing it is surgery, it is not risk-free and it cannot be finished in one visit. On the first trip you have a scan, meet the dentist and the implant is placed. The implant then needs to bond with the bone while the gum heals. The crown is fitted at a later appointment, at least three months after placement, and only once the dentist confirms the implant is stable.

That is why implants from South Africa usually mean two long-haul trips. Direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, and you need an e-Visa for each trip. Ask the treating dentist to confirm in writing when it is safe to fly after the first stage. Full-arch treatment usually means about five to seven days for the first stage and a later visit for the permanent bridge.

If you want implants done in a single journey, staying in South Africa may suit you better. If two trips fit your life, ask for both in the plan before you book anything.

Veneers: one stay, and keeping your own teeth

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front of the teeth to change their colour, shape or size. Most patients complete them in Turkey in five to seven days: assessment and planning, preparation, temporary teeth while the veneers are made, then fitting and adjustment. Because this is dental treatment rather than major surgery, the flight home is less of a medical concern, but do not put the fitting on your last day.

The bigger question is how much of your own tooth is removed. A veneer covers mainly the front surface, often with minimal preparation in suitable cases. A crown covers the whole tooth and needs much more of it filed away, which cannot be undone. Many of the “Turkey teeth” stories involve crowns where veneers were expected, or smiles that are too white or too large. Crowns are sometimes the right choice for heavily filled, broken or root-treated teeth, but they should never be a surprise. Ask, in writing, whether each tooth will get a veneer or a crown, how much will be prepared and why, which material will be used, and whether you will see a digital smile plan first.

What to compare, side by side

Use this table to check any plan, whether it comes from a dentist in South Africa or from us.

What to compare Dental implants Veneers
Trips to Turkey Usually two; the crown is fitted at least three months after placement Usually one stay of five to seven days
Written in the plan Treating dentist, implant brand and system, number of implants, any grafting, every stage Treating dentist, number of teeth, veneer or crown for each tooth, how much is prepared, material
Healing time The implant must bond with the bone before the final crown No bone healing; temporary teeth while the veneers are made
Flying home The dentist confirms in writing when it is safe after the first stage Less of a medical concern; leave room for an adjustment
Aftercare in South Africa Daily cleaning and check-ups for life; your dentist needs the implant system and components Brushing, flossing and check-ups; a night guard if you grind your teeth
Guarantee Implants one year from placement; crowns one year from fitting Read what the guarantee says for your treatment before you book

Aftercare at your South African dentist, and the guarantee

Implants and veneers need routine care for years, and that care happens at home. Tell your dentist in South Africa before you travel and book a check-up for after each trip. Bring home a written record of the treatment, the materials, your X-rays or scans and, for implants, the implant brand, system and components, so your dentist knows exactly what was done. Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa, which makes online follow-up easy; our own team stays in touch online and on WhatsApp after you fly home.

Our treatment guarantee covers dental implants for one year from placement and crowns and restorations for one year from fitting. It does not cover problems caused by smoking, poor oral hygiene, accidents or treatment by another provider at home. If a claim is accepted, the treatment in İzmir is free; flights and accommodation for the return visit are your own. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective dental treatment abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment, so check before you book.

We have looked after international patients since 2005 and have never passed a patient to a third party. Treatment is carried out by our contracted dental team in İzmir, with airport transfers and transport to appointments arranged for you.

When staying in South Africa may be better

Treatment abroad is not the right choice for everyone. Staying at home may be better if:

  • You cannot make two long-haul trips for implants, or cannot take five to seven days away for veneers
  • Your treatment has many stages over a long period, or you are likely to need close, hands-on follow-up
  • You have a medical condition or take medicines that affect healing; your dentist and doctor decide whether treatment is safe and where
  • You already have a dentist you trust who can do the work on a timescale that suits you

What we will not do: we will not place implants or prepare teeth before you have seen and agreed a written plan, we will not fit a crown before the dentist confirms the implant has healed, and we will not file down healthy teeth for crowns where veneers would do.

Frequently asked questions

Do dental implants in Turkey need two trips from South Africa?

Usually, yes. The implant is placed on the first trip and the crown is fitted at a later appointment, at least three months after placement. The exact number of visits depends on your plan, so ask for it in writing before you book.

Should I have veneers or crowns?

That depends on your teeth. A veneer covers mainly the front surface, often with minimal preparation, while a crown covers the whole tooth and needs much more of it removed, which cannot be undone. Crowns can be right for broken or heavily filled teeth. Ask which you are being offered for each tooth, in writing.

Are dental implants and veneers cheaper in Turkey than in South Africa?

We do not publish price comparisons. The cost depends on the number of teeth or implants, any preparatory work, the materials and brands, the number of visits and what the package includes. After a free online consultation you get a written price. Compare it like for like, including flights and, for implants, a second trip.

Can my dentist in South Africa look after implants or veneers done in Turkey?

Yes, for routine care. Bring home a written record of the treatment and materials, your X-rays or scans and, for implants, the implant system and components, so your dentist knows exactly what was done.

Will my medical aid cover dental implants or veneers in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective dental treatment abroad, and cosmetic veneers are generally not covered. Ask your scheme before you travel and do not assume anything will be refunded.
