Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing): Suitability, Limits and Risks

Cryolipolysis, often called fat-freezing treatment, cools selected subcutaneous fat through an applicator. It is a contouring procedure, not a treatment for obesity, visceral fat or loose skin, and it cannot guarantee a particular reduction.

Assessment and suitability

A qualified clinician should assess the treatment area, skin, sensation, circulation, hernia risk, medical conditions, medicines and previous procedures. Some cold-related, nerve, skin or immune conditions may make treatment unsuitable. Pregnancy, significant laxity or a different underlying problem may require another plan.

What treatment can and cannot do

Changes generally develop gradually and vary between people and areas. More than one session may be proposed, but the number should follow assessment rather than a package promise. Alternatives may include no treatment, lifestyle support, another non-surgical method, liposuction or surgery for excess skin or muscle separation.

Risks

Possible effects include pain, redness, swelling, bruising, numbness, altered sensation, skin injury, contour irregularity and dissatisfaction. A rare complication called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia can enlarge the treated tissue and may require surgery. Long-term appearance also depends on weight and ageing.

The NHS cosmetic-practitioner guide recommends checking qualifications, product or device details, risks and aftercare directly with the practitioner.
