Breast Health, BRCA Risk and Reconstruction Guide
Breast health, inherited cancer risk and reconstruction require individual assessment by an appropriate clinical team. Celebrity stories and appearance speculation cannot diagnose risk, determine treatment or predict a surgical result.
Breast changes and assessment
A new lump, skin or nipple change, discharge, persistent focal pain or another unexplained change should be assessed through an appropriate breast service. Screening and diagnostic tests depend on age, symptoms, personal history and local guidance. Cosmetic consultation is not a substitute for cancer assessment.
BRCA and inherited risk
BRCA1, BRCA2 and other inherited variants can increase the risk of certain cancers, but a family history or online calculator does not confirm a mutation. Genetic counselling helps a person understand whether testing is appropriate, what a result may mean for them and relatives, and the limits of testing.
Risk management may include tailored screening, medicines or risk-reducing surgery. The choice depends on the specific result, estimated risk, age, health, family plans and personal preferences. A specialist team should explain benefits, limitations and alternatives without presenting surgery as the only responsible choice.
Mastectomy and reconstruction
A mastectomy removes breast tissue and may be used to treat cancer or, in selected people at high inherited risk, to reduce risk. Reconstruction may use an implant or the patient’s own tissue and can sometimes be immediate or delayed. Choosing no reconstruction or using an external prosthesis are also valid options.
Risks can include bleeding, infection, blood clots, wound-healing problems, altered sensation, implant complications, tissue loss, asymmetry and further operations. Reconstruction does not recreate a natural breast or guarantee appearance, sensation or emotional outcome. Cancer treatment and surveillance take priority.
