Verify professional registration, relevant ophthalmology training, experience with the proposed procedure and the arrangements for urgent review. Suitability tests

An eye examination may include refraction, corneal measurements and mapping, tear-film assessment, pupil evaluation, eye-pressure checks and retinal examination when indicated. Stable prescription, corneal condition, dry eye, medicines, pregnancy and other eye or health conditions can affect suitability.

LASIK, PRK and SMILE

Different laser procedures use different corneal approaches. No technique is automatically best. The ophthalmologist should explain which options are clinically available, why one is proposed, expected limitations and whether glasses, contact lenses or a non-laser alternative remain appropriate.

Risks and limitations

Risks can include dry eye, glare, halos, fluctuating or reduced vision, under-correction, over-correction, infection, inflammation, corneal complications and the need for further treatment. Reading vision can change with age even after successful distance correction. Treatment cannot guarantee freedom from glasses or a particular visual result.

Recovery and travel

Vision and comfort can fluctuate after treatment. Eye drops, shields, screen use, driving, exercise, swimming, make-up, flying and follow-up should follow the ophthalmologist’s instructions. Recovery is not the time to plan sightseeing or activities that conflict with clinical care.
