Apron Belly Grades: Meaning, Health and Treatment Limits

Apron belly grades are descriptive systems for how far an abdominal pannus extends. They can help clinicians document anatomy and practical effects, but a grade alone does not diagnose disease or determine which treatment is safe.

What assessment should include

A clinician may consider the depth and extent of the fold, skin condition, mobility, hygiene, pain, hernia or muscle separation, weight history, medicines, diabetes, smoking and pregnancy plans. Different grading systems may use different boundaries, so online self-grading is limited.

Skin health and daily care

Keep the fold gently clean and dry. A breathable support garment may improve comfort but should not impair breathing, circulation or skin. Seek medical advice for persistent rash, broken skin, discharge, odour, increasing redness, swelling, pain or fever.

Treatment options and limitations

Weight-management support may improve health and reduce some fat but cannot guarantee removal of stretched skin. Non-surgical contouring may offer modest change for selected local fat and does not remove a large pannus. Panniculectomy removes an overhang; abdominoplasty may address additional contour or selected muscle concerns.

Risks

Surgery can involve bleeding, infection, fluid collection, scarring, altered sensation, wound-healing problems, blood clots, anaesthetic complications and revision. Suitability depends on individual health rather than the grade alone.
