For patients in South Africa
Meniscus surgery in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
Each knee has two menisci, C-shaped pads of cartilage that absorb shock and spread body weight across the joint. They tear with a sudden twist, especially in sport, or wear and split with age. Meniscus surgery is done through keyhole incisions (arthroscopy) to repair the tear or remove the damaged part. This page explains when it helps and what South African patients need to plan.
In short: Many meniscus tears settle without surgery. When pain, locking or catching continue despite physiotherapy, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in İzmir can repair or trim the meniscus as day surgery. Recovery after partial removal takes weeks; after a repair it takes three to six months, most of it at home.

Who it suits
- People with a meniscus tear confirmed on MRI
- People with ongoing knee pain, or a knee that locks or catches
- People who have not improved with rest, physiotherapy and medication
- People whose tear is suitable for repair or partial removal
Age, activity, the type and position of the tear, arthritis and the stability of the knee all affect the decision. Wear-related tears in older knees with arthritis often do better without surgery, and the surgeon will say so. Send your MRI scan and report, and any X-rays, with your enquiry.
Repair or partial removal
- Meniscus repair — the tear is stitched; suited to tears in the outer part of the meniscus, which has a good blood supply, usually after an injury in a younger or active person with a stable knee
- Partial meniscectomy — only the damaged part is removed; used for wear-related, complex or irreparable tears
Where possible the surgeon preserves the meniscus, because removing tissue can raise the risk of arthritis later. The operation is done under regional or general anaesthesia and takes 30 to 60 minutes. More detail is on the arthroscopic meniscus treatment page.
How long to stay, and the flight home
Meniscus surgery is usually day surgery, and most patients go home the same day. The surgeon checks the knee before clearing you to fly; ask for the planned length of stay in your written treatment plan, and book a return ticket you can change, especially after a repair.
- Ask the surgeon about clot prevention for a ten-hour flight
- Book an aisle seat so you can stretch the leg and walk, and drink water
- After a repair you may be on crutches or in a brace; ask for airport assistance
- Bring your MRI, operation notes and physiotherapy plan home with you
Recovery at home
- After partial removal: weight-bearing usually within a day, swelling improving over one to two weeks, normal daily activities within two to four weeks, sport after about four to six weeks
- After repair: limited weight-bearing at first, often a brace, physiotherapy building up gradually, and full recovery in three to six months
Physiotherapy reduces swelling, restores movement and strengthens the muscles round the knee. Arrange a physiotherapist near you before you travel. Follow-up continues by message and video call; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Medical complications arising from the treatment, and any revision that becomes clinically necessary as a result, are covered for one year from the date of treatment by our treatment guarantee. Any such treatment is carried out in İzmir by the treating team; flights and accommodation remain your own responsibility.
Risks
Possible complications include infection, bleeding or swelling, blood clots (rare), stiffness, failure of a repair and arthritis developing over time. If your ACL is also torn, see our ACL surgery guide. Other sports injuries are covered in our sports injuries guide and the wider orthopaedic surgery guide for South African patients.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed your scans and history, we will not promise a result, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. A long journey is not a reason to operate when conservative treatment has not been tried, or to do more in one operation than the surgeon judges safe.
Frequently asked questions
Does every meniscus tear need surgery?
No. Many tears improve with non-surgical treatment. Surgery is considered when symptoms persist or the knee locks or catches.
Is meniscus repair better than removal?
When possible, repair is preferred because it keeps the knee’s cushioning, but not every tear can be repaired. The surgeon decides from the MRI and what is seen during the operation.
How soon can I walk after meniscus surgery?
Most patients walk the same day or within 24 hours after partial removal. After a repair, weight-bearing may be limited at first.
How long after meniscus surgery can I fly home to South Africa?
The surgeon decides after checking the knee. Because the flight takes around ten hours, ask about clot prevention and book a return ticket you can change.
Will my medical aid cover meniscus surgery in Turkey?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover planned treatment abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes it. Ask both specifically before you book.
