Lipoedema surgery in Turkey from South Africa: an honest guide

Lipoedema (spelt lipedema in American usage) causes abnormal fat to build up, most often in the legs, and it does not respond well to diet or exercise. Lipoedema surgery is a specialised form of liposuction that removes this fat while protecting the surrounding tissue and the lymphatic system. This page sets out what it can and cannot do, and how South African patients can plan the trip.

In short: Lipoedema surgery uses gentle, lymph-sparing liposuction to reduce affected fat in the hips, thighs, knees and lower legs. It can improve shape, comfort and mobility, but it does not cure the condition and is not a weight-loss operation. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval; the ten-hour flight home makes a flexible return date sensible.

What lipoedema surgery does

Standard liposuction is mainly cosmetic fat reduction. Lipoedema surgery is designed for the abnormal fat of lipoedema, using techniques that limit trauma to the tissues around it and support lymphatic health. The aim is to reduce the affected fat, improve the proportions of the legs and ease symptoms such as tenderness, heaviness and swelling.

The surgeon assesses which areas are affected, usually among the hips, thighs, knees and lower legs, and recommends what to treat. If you do not have lipoedema, standard liposuction or another body contouring procedure may suit you better. More detail is on the lipoedema surgery treatment page.

Who it suits

  • People diagnosed with lipoedema
  • People with disproportionate fat in the legs that diet and exercise have not changed
  • People with tenderness, swelling or heaviness in the affected areas
  • People who understand the operation improves symptoms but does not cure the condition

If you have seen a doctor at home about lipoedema, bring their notes; they help the surgeon understand your history. Lipoedema mostly affects women and often starts or worsens around hormonal changes such as puberty or pregnancy.

Getting there

South Africans need an e-Visa. Direct flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town reach Istanbul in around ten hours, then a short domestic flight takes you to İzmir. Surgeons are board-certified, and treatment is planned only after a surgeon has reviewed your photographs and history.

How long to stay, and the flight home

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, depending on the surgeon’s assessment and how you are recovering. Legs that have just had surgery are swollen, and a long flight adds to the risk of blood clots, so the surgeon decides when you can travel and what precautions to take. If several areas are affected, ask whether everything can safely be treated in one visit.

  • Wear your compression garment on the flight, as the surgeon advises
  • Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
  • Ask for help with luggage rather than lifting it yourself
  • Tell us at the start about any history of blood clots, smoking or hormone medication

Recovery

Recovery depends on how many areas are treated. Expect swelling and bruising for several weeks. Compression garments are an important part of recovery: they control swelling, support healing and help the legs adapt. The surgeon gives personalised guidance on returning to activity.

The fat cells removed do not grow back, but the remaining ones can change with weight, so a stable weight helps keep the result. Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call; İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP involved. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are covered by our treatment guarantee. See also our body contouring guide for South African patients.

What decides the cost

The number of areas and the length of stay decide the quote, which is transparent and given in writing after review. Whether a South African medical scheme will contribute to lipoedema treatment abroad varies; ask your scheme directly and get its answer in writing. Standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment.

What we will not do

We will not describe lipoedema surgery as a cure or a weight-loss operation, promise a result, or confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you.

Frequently asked questions

Will lipoedema surgery cure lipoedema?

No. It does not cure the underlying condition, but it can reduce affected fat and improve symptoms, mobility and quality of life.

How is lipoedema surgery different from standard liposuction?

Standard liposuction is mainly cosmetic. Lipoedema surgery targets abnormal lipoedema fat with techniques that limit trauma to surrounding tissue and support lymphatic health.

How long after lipoedema surgery can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but the surgeon decides. Because the flight home takes around ten hours, you may be asked to stay longer.

Will I need to wear compression garments?

Yes. Compression garments are an important part of recovery, helping to control swelling and support healing.

Will my medical aid cover lipoedema surgery in Turkey?

It varies. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, so ask your scheme directly and get its answer in writing before you book.
