Chin reduction in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Chin reduction reshapes a chin that is too large or too prominent for the rest of the face, so that the profile looks more balanced. For South African patients the surgery is the same as for anyone else; what needs planning is the stay in İzmir and the long flight home. This page covers both, and what to ask before you book.

In short: Chin reduction reshapes the chin bone to reduce its size or projection. The operation usually takes 60 to 90 minutes, and most patients are cleared to fly home after five to seven days. The exact technique depends on your facial structure, and the surgeon decides it at consultation.

What the operation involves

The surgeon reshapes the chin bone to make it smaller or less prominent. Because the change is made to the underlying bone, it is permanent. The exact technique depends on your facial structure, how prominent the chin is and the result you want, and the surgeon explains the plan at consultation once you have been examined.

Full details are on the chin reduction treatment page. Chin reduction is the opposite of a chin implant, which adds projection to a small chin; our facial implants guide covers that side, and our facial surgery guide for South African patients covers the rest.

Who it suits

  • People whose chin is large or prominent compared with the rest of the face
  • People who want a more balanced profile
  • People in good general health who do not smoke, or who can stop before surgery
  • People with realistic expectations about the result and the recovery

The chin, nose and jawline are judged together. Some patients consider nose surgery at the same time; our rhinoplasty guide explains that procedure. The surgeon decides what is safe in one operation.

Your stay and the flight home

On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon. After surgery you recover at Mandarin Grove near İzmir, with nursing support and follow-up checks. For the first three days you rest and follow the surgeon’s instructions closely. Mild swelling, bruising, tightness and discomfort around the chin and jaw are normal, and keeping your head raised helps.

Between days four and seven the swelling and discomfort ease, and most patients manage light daily activities. Depending on the extent of the surgery and the surgeon’s assessment, most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. The flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town is long, so book a return ticket you can change, rest with your head raised on board and drink water.

Recovery at home

Most people return to normal routines between weeks two and six, as the swelling goes down and the new contour becomes visible. Strenuous exercise should wait until the surgeon clears you. Healing continues for longer than after an implant: residual swelling can take three to twelve months to settle, and the final shape becomes clearer over that time.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team. Our treatment guarantee covers medical complications and clinically necessary revisions for one year from surgery; that treatment is done in İzmir without charge, but flights and accommodation are yours to cover. It does not cover preferring a different look when the result is within what was discussed. Keep your GP and dentist informed, and take your operation notes home for your own records.

Planning the trip from South Africa

  • Flights: direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir
  • Visa: South Africans apply for an e-Visa online before travelling; see the e-Visa guide
  • Time difference: İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa, which makes follow-up calls easy
  • Cover: South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment; check with both

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed your photographs and health, we will not promise a particular result, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. A long journey home is not a reason to add more procedures to one operation than the surgeon judges safe, or to fly before you are cleared.

Frequently asked questions

How long after chin reduction can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, depending on the extent of the surgery. The surgeon decides, so book a return ticket you can change.

How is chin reduction done?

The surgeon reshapes the chin bone to reduce its size or projection. The exact technique depends on your facial structure and the result you want, and is decided at consultation.

Is the result permanent?

Yes. Chin reduction changes the underlying bone, so the result is permanent. The final shape becomes clearer over several months as swelling settles.

What is the difference between chin reduction and a chin implant?

Chin reduction makes a large or prominent chin smaller, while a chin implant adds projection to a small or recessed chin.

Will my medical aid cover chin reduction?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment. Check with both before you book.
