Uvulopharyngoplasty in Turkey

A uvulopharyngoplasty is one of the most effective procedures for widening the airway at the back of the throat, helping to reduce snoring, improve breathing during sleep, relieve symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea in suitable patients, and enhance overall airway function.

Most patients are ready to fly home after 3–5 days, with a return to light daily activities within 1–2 weeks. Throat discomfort and swallowing difficulties gradually improve as healing progresses, with full recovery typically taking 2–4 weeks.

THE PROCEDURE

What is uvulopharyngoplasty?

A uvulopharyngoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove or reshape excess tissue from the soft palate, uvula, and surrounding throat structures, helping to widen the airway, improve breathing during sleep, and reduce snoring and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea.

Uvulopharyngoplasty is commonly recommended for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea or chronic snoring caused by excess tissue at the back of the throat. During the procedure, the surgeon carefully removes or reshapes the uvula, part of the soft palate, and, in some cases, additional surrounding tissue to create a wider, more stable airway. Depending on your individual needs, the operation may also be combined with a tonsillectomy or other airway procedures to achieve the best possible outcome.

At Revitalize in Turkey, every uvulopharyngoplasty is performed by experienced ENT surgeons using modern surgical techniques and supported by comprehensive aftercare. We provide international patients with safe, effective treatment and a smooth recovery experience from arrival through to their return home.

RECOVERY

Uvulopharyngoplasty recovery timeline

Days 1–3: It is normal to experience a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, mild swelling, and discomfort when speaking during the first few days after surgery. These symptoms can usually be managed with prescribed pain relief. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating soft, cool foods will help support healing.

Days 4–7: The throat may feel more uncomfortable as healing continues, and a white coating over the surgical area is a normal part of the recovery process. Most patients can carry out light daily activities but should continue to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, smoking, alcohol, and very hot or spicy foods. Most patients are fit to fly home after 3–5 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–4: Swelling continues to settle, breathing during sleep begins to improve, and swallowing becomes more comfortable. Most patients can return to work and normal daily activities, although strenuous exercise should only be resumed once advised by their surgeon.

Weeks 4–6: Healing is typically complete, with the full benefits of improved airflow, reduced snoring, and relief from obstructive sleep apnoea symptoms becoming more noticeable. Most patients can resume all normal activities without restrictions once cleared by their surgeon.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

A uvulopharyngoplasty is a well-established procedure, but like any surgery, it carries risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, temporary swelling, changes in voice, dry throat, or delayed healing. More rarely, complications such as bleeding, infection, airway swelling, persistent swallowing difficulties, changes in speech, or the need for further treatment can occur.

We minimise these risks by performing a comprehensive pre-operative assessment, using modern surgical techniques, and providing structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is a uvulopharyngoplasty?

Uvulopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a surgical procedure that removes or reshapes excess tissue from the soft palate, uvula, and surrounding throat to widen the airway. It is commonly performed to treat obstructive sleep apnoea and reduce chronic snoring.

Why might I need a uvulopharyngoplasty?

Your ENT specialist may recommend UPPP if excess tissue at the back of your throat is contributing to obstructive sleep apnoea, loud snoring, or breathing difficulties during sleep that have not improved with non-surgical treatments.

How is a uvulopharyngoplasty performed?

The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon removes or reshapes the uvula, part of the soft palate, and, when necessary, additional throat tissue to create a wider, more stable airway. It may also be combined with a tonsillectomy or other airway procedures.

Is uvulopharyngoplasty painful?

It is normal to experience a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and throat swelling after surgery. These symptoms are temporary and are usually well managed with prescribed pain medication.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients are ready to fly home after 3–5 days. Light daily activities can usually be resumed within 1–2 weeks, while full recovery typically takes 2–4 weeks.

Will uvulopharyngoplasty stop snoring?

UPPP can significantly reduce snoring in many patients, particularly when excess tissue at the back of the throat is the main cause. However, results vary depending on the underlying cause of the snoring.

Can uvulopharyngoplasty cure obstructive sleep apnoea?

UPPP can improve or resolve obstructive sleep apnoea in selected patients, particularly those with blockage at the level of the soft palate. Your ENT specialist will assess your airway and recommend whether the procedure is suitable for you.

Will my voice or swallowing change after surgery?

Temporary changes in your voice or swallowing are common during the healing process. These usually improve as swelling settles, although persistent changes can occur in a small number of patients.

Can uvulopharyngoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes. UPPP is frequently combined with a tonsillectomy, nasal surgery, tongue base procedures, or other treatments for obstructive sleep apnoea, depending on the location of the airway obstruction.
