Photorefractive Keratectomy: Laser Eye Surgery Guide

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea after its thin surface layer is removed. Unlike LASIK, it does not create a corneal flap. The surface then heals, and vision can fluctuate during recovery.

Who may be considered?

Suitability depends on prescription stability, corneal shape and thickness, tear film, pupils, retina, general health, medicines, pregnancy status and previous eye surgery. PRK may be discussed when a flap-based procedure is unsuitable, but it is not automatically safer or more effective for every patient.

Procedure and recovery

The surgeon removes the corneal surface layer and uses an excimer laser according to the treatment plan. A bandage contact lens may protect the eye while the surface heals. Discomfort, light sensitivity, watering and blurred or changing vision can occur. Driving, work, exercise and contact-lens removal instructions must be personalised.

Risks and limitations

Risks include infection, inflammation, delayed surface healing, corneal haze, dry eye, glare, halos, under- or over-correction, regression and further treatment. Rarely, vision can be permanently reduced. PRK cannot guarantee freedom from glasses or prevent later age-related eye changes.
