Liposculpture: Assessment, Limits and Risks
Liposculpture is a descriptive term for liposuction planned to change selected body contours. It removes limited areas of subcutaneous fat; it is not a weight-loss treatment, does not correct significant loose skin and cannot guarantee a sculpted or athletic appearance.
Assessment and options
Consultation should review fat distribution, skin quality, scars, weight stability, health, medicines, smoking, clot risk and goals. Alternatives may include no treatment, lifestyle measures, standard liposuction, another body-contouring operation or staged care. “High-definition” and device names are not proof of a better result.
Procedure and limits
Fat is removed through small incisions using a cannula. Technique, anaesthesia, treated areas and volume must be individualised. Liposuction cannot reliably tighten substantial loose skin, repair muscle separation or prevent future weight-related change.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, contour irregularity, asymmetry, altered sensation, skin injury, fluid imbalance, blood clots, fat embolism, anaesthetic complications and further treatment. Combining multiple areas or operations can increase risk and recovery needs.
