What is PRK eye surgery?
PRK corrects common refractive errors by precisely reshaping the cornea, allowing light to focus correctly on the retina for clearer vision.
Unlike glasses or contact lenses, which temporarily compensate for vision problems, PRK addresses the underlying cause of short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Rather than creating a corneal flap, the thin outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently removed, and the excimer laser reshapes the surface directly. The epithelium then regenerates naturally over the following days, protected by a soft bandage contact lens. Because no flap is created, PRK leaves the cornea structurally intact — making it well suited to patients with thinner corneas, and to those in contact sports or physically demanding occupations.
