THE PROCEDURE

What is top surgery?

Top surgery removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest to create a flatter, more masculine contour. Depending on your anatomy, the procedure may also involve repositioning and resizing the nipples to achieve a natural-looking chest appearance.

Unlike non-surgical treatments, top surgery permanently removes breast tissue and excess skin, creating a masculine chest contour that cannot be achieved through exercise or weight loss alone. The procedure is particularly beneficial for transgender men and non-binary individuals experiencing gender dysphoria, helping to improve body confidence and quality of life.

At Revitalize in Turkey, every top surgery procedure is tailored to your individual anatomy, transition goals, and aesthetic preferences. Our experienced plastic surgeons use advanced gender-affirming surgical techniques to achieve balanced, natural-looking results while prioritising safety, combining expert surgical care with the exceptional value and hospitality that have made Turkey a leading destination for gender-affirming surgery.

SUITABILITY

Are you a candidate for top surgery?

Top surgery may be right for you if you:

  • Are a transgender man or non-binary individual seeking a flatter, more masculine chest

  • Experience gender dysphoria related to the appearance of your chest

  • Have realistic expectations about the results and recovery

  • Are in good general health and a non-smoker, or able to stop before surgery

  • Have a stable weight and are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after surgery

  • Are seeking a permanent solution to achieve a chest that better aligns with your gender identity

Candidacy is always confirmed after a medical review of your medical history, photos, and goals. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate surgical technique—such as double incision with nipple grafts or periareolar top surgery—based on your chest size, skin elasticity, and desired outcome.

RECOVERY

Top surgery recovery timeline

Days 1–3: Rest with your upper body elevated whenever possible to help reduce swelling. Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are expected during this period, and your dressings and any drains (if used) will be monitored by our nursing team. You’ll also wear a compression vest to support healing.

Days 4–7: If drains have been placed, they are usually removed during this period. You’ll become more comfortable carrying out light daily activities while continuing to wear your compression garment. Most patients are able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–6: Swelling continues to improve, and you can gradually return to normal daily activities. Heavy lifting, upper body workouts, and strenuous exercise should be avoided until your surgeon confirms it is safe to resume them. You’ll continue wearing your compression vest as instructed to support optimal healing.

Months 3–6: The chest continues to settle into its final shape, scars gradually soften and fade, nipple sensation continues to recover where applicable, and any remaining swelling resolves. With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, your results are long-lasting.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

Top surgery is a well-established procedure, but like any surgery, it carries risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma), delayed wound healing, changes in nipple sensation, and — more rarely — bleeding, infection, blood clots, partial nipple graft loss (where nipple grafts are used), or noticeable scarring.

We minimise these risks by performing a comprehensive pre-operative health assessment, using meticulous gender-affirming surgical techniques, and providing structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is top surgery?

Top surgery is a gender-affirming procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest to create a flatter, more masculine appearance. Depending on your anatomy, it may also include resizing and repositioning the nipples for a natural-looking result.

Who is a good candidate for top surgery?

Top surgery is suitable for transgender men and non-binary individuals seeking a masculine chest contour. Your surgeon will assess your medical history, anatomy, goals, and overall health to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

Which top surgery technique will I need?

The most suitable technique depends on your chest size, skin elasticity, and desired outcome. Common techniques include double incision with free nipple grafts, periareolar, and keyhole top surgery. Your surgeon will recommend the best option during your consultation.

Will I have visible scars after top surgery?

Yes. The amount and location of scarring depend on the technique used. While scars are permanent, they are carefully placed to be as discreet as possible and typically fade significantly over time with proper scar care.

How long is the recovery from top surgery?

Most patients are able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon's approval. You'll wear a compression vest for several weeks, and most normal daily activities can be resumed within 2–3 weeks. Heavy lifting and upper body exercise should be avoided for around 4–6 weeks.

Will I lose nipple sensation after top surgery?

Changes in nipple sensation are common after top surgery. Sensation may be temporarily reduced, gradually return over several months, or be permanently altered, particularly when free nipple grafts are used. Your surgeon will explain what you can expect based on your chosen technique.

Are the results permanent?

Yes. The breast tissue removed during top surgery does not grow back, making the results permanent. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle will help preserve your chest contour over the long term.

Can top surgery be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Depending on your goals, top surgery may be combined with liposuction to improve chest contouring or performed alongside other gender-affirming procedures as part of your transition plan. Your surgeon will advise whether combining procedures is appropriate and safe.
