THE PROCEDURE

What is breast implant replacement surgery?

Breast implant replacement is a surgical procedure that removes and replaces existing breast implants to restore or enhance the size, shape, and appearance of the breasts. Patients may choose implant replacement to change implant size or profile, address implant-related concerns, or refresh results after many years.

Unlike an initial breast augmentation, implant replacement is tailored to your existing implants, breast tissue, and long-term goals. It may also be combined with procedures such as a breast lift or capsule correction to achieve the best possible outcome.

SUITABILITY

Are you a candidate for breast implant replacement?

A breast implant replacement procedure may be right for you if you:

  • Would like to replace your existing breast implants due to ageing, wear, or personal preference

  • Wish to change the size, shape, or profile of your current implants

  • Have experienced implant-related concerns, such as rupture, capsular contracture, or implant displacement

  • Are unhappy with the appearance of your current implants or would like to refresh your results

  • Are in good general health and a non-smoker, or able to stop smoking before surgery

  • Have realistic expectations about the results and recovery

Candidacy is always confirmed after a medical review of your medical history, current implants, photos, and goals. If implant replacement alone is not the most appropriate option, we’ll honestly recommend combining it with a breast lift or other corrective procedures to achieve the best possible outcome.

RECOVERY

Breast implant replacement recovery timeline

Days 1–3: Rest with your upper body slightly elevated to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Mild swelling, tightness, and bruising are expected during this period, and your dressings and any drains (if used) will be monitored by our nursing team. You’ll also be advised to wear a supportive surgical bra continuously.

Days 4–7: If drains have been placed, they are usually removed during this period. You’ll gradually become more comfortable carrying out light daily activities while continuing to wear your surgical bra. Most patients are able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–6: Swelling continues to improve as your new implants settle into position and your breasts begin to take on their updated shape. You can progressively return to normal daily activities, but heavy lifting, upper body workouts, and strenuous exercise should be avoided until your surgeon confirms it is safe to resume them.

Months 3–6: Your breasts continue to soften and the implants settle into their final position, with any remaining swelling gradually resolving. The final outcome becomes increasingly visible, providing long-lasting results with appropriate aftercare and a stable weight.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

A breast implant replacement procedure is a well-established surgery, but like any operation, it carries potential risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma), delayed wound healing, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and — more rarely — bleeding, infection, blood clots, capsular contracture, implant rupture, implant displacement, asymmetry, or the need for further corrective surgery.

We minimise these risks by performing a comprehensive pre-operative health assessment, carefully evaluating your existing implants, using meticulous surgical techniques, and providing structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is breast implant replacement?

Breast implant replacement is a surgical procedure that removes existing breast implants and replaces them with new ones. It may be performed to change implant size or shape, address implant-related complications, or refresh the appearance of the breasts after many years.

Why might I need to replace my breast implants?

Patients choose implant replacement for a variety of reasons, including changing their desired breast size, treating a ruptured implant, correcting capsular contracture, improving breast symmetry, or updating older implants. Some patients also combine implant replacement with a breast lift to achieve the best aesthetic result.

Do breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years?

Not necessarily. Modern breast implants are designed to be long-lasting and do not have an expiry date. They only need to be replaced if a problem develops or if you wish to change your appearance. Your surgeon can advise whether replacement is recommended based on your implants and symptoms.

Can I change the size of my implants during replacement surgery?

Yes. Implant replacement allows you to increase or decrease your implant size, choose a different implant profile, or switch to a different implant type, depending on your goals and anatomy.

Can I replace my implants with smaller ones?

Yes. Many patients choose smaller implants to achieve a more natural appearance. If significant skin laxity is present after downsizing, your surgeon may recommend combining the procedure with a breast lift.

What happens if one of my implants has ruptured?

A ruptured implant is typically removed and replaced during surgery. Your surgeon will also assess the surrounding tissue and, if necessary, remove any scar tissue to achieve the best possible result.

Can breast implant replacement be combined with a breast lift?

Yes. Implant replacement is commonly combined with a breast lift to improve breast position, remove excess skin, and create a firmer, more youthful breast shape.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients can return to light daily activities within the first week and fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon's approval. Swelling continues to improve over the following weeks, with final results becoming visible over 3–6 months.

Will my scars be worse than my original surgery?

In most cases, your surgeon will use the existing implant scars whenever possible, helping to minimise additional scarring. If a breast lift or other corrective procedure is required, additional incisions may be necessary.

Will my new implants look and feel natural?

Once healing is complete and the implants have settled, the breasts typically develop a soft, natural appearance. Your surgeon will recommend the most suitable implant size and profile to complement your body proportions.
