Lip Lift: Assessment, Alternatives and Risks
A lip lift is surgery that shortens the skin between the nose and upper lip to change the amount of visible upper lip and tooth show. It does not add filler volume, and a natural-looking smile or particular proportion cannot be guaranteed.
Assessment and alternatives
The surgeon should assess facial and dental proportions, lip movement, skin, scars, nasal shape, oral health, medicines, smoking and expectations. Alternatives may include no procedure, temporary filler, another lip procedure or dental assessment when tooth position affects the appearance.
Procedure and risks
The incision is commonly placed near the base of the nose, but design varies. Risks include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, visible or raised scarring, asymmetry, altered sensation, nasal change, stiffness, change in smile or tooth show, dissatisfaction and revision.
Recovery and results
Swelling and scar change vary. The treating surgeon should advise about wound care, medicines, eating, facial movement, work, exercise and review. Surgery is long-lasting but facial ageing continues, and the exact appearance cannot be predicted.
