Uvulectomy in Turkey

A uvulectomy is one of the most effective procedures for removing all or part of the uvula, helping to reduce snoring, improve airflow through the throat, relieve symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea in selected patients, and enhance overall throat function.

Most patients are ready to fly home after 2–3 days, with a return to light daily activities within a few days. Throat discomfort and mild swelling usually improve over the first 1–2 weeks, with full recovery typically taking around 2 weeks.

THE PROCEDURE

What is uvulectomy?

A uvulectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the uvula, helping to improve airflow through the throat, reduce snoring, relieve symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea in selected patients, and improve overall throat function.

The uvula is the small, soft tissue that hangs from the back of the roof of the mouth. In some people, an enlarged or elongated uvula can contribute to chronic snoring, airway obstruction, sleep-disordered breathing, or persistent throat irritation. During a uvulectomy, the surgeon removes all or part of the uvula through the mouth under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the individual case. The procedure is sometimes performed on its own or combined with other treatments, such as soft palate surgery or tonsillectomy, to achieve the best possible outcome.

At Revitalize in Turkey, every uvulectomy is performed by experienced ENT surgeons using modern surgical techniques and supported by comprehensive aftercare. We provide international patients with safe, effective treatment and a smooth recovery experience from arrival through to their return home.

RECOVERY

Uvulectomy recovery timeline

Days 1–3: It is normal to experience a sore throat, mild swelling, difficulty swallowing, and slight discomfort when speaking during the first few days after surgery. These symptoms can usually be managed with prescribed pain relief. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating soft, cool foods will help support healing.

Days 4–7: Most patients begin to feel more comfortable and can carry out light daily activities. The throat continues to heal, although mild discomfort may persist. You should continue to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, smoking, alcohol, and very hot or spicy foods. Most patients are fit to fly home after 2–3 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–4: Swelling continues to settle, and swallowing becomes more comfortable. Most patients have returned to work and normal daily activities, although strenuous exercise should only be resumed once advised by their surgeon.

Weeks 4–6: Healing is typically complete, with improved airflow through the throat and a reduction in snoring or other symptoms becoming fully apparent. Most patients can resume all normal activities without restrictions once cleared by their surgeon.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

A uvulectomy is a well-established procedure, but like any surgery, it carries risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, temporary swelling, changes in voice, or delayed healing. More rarely, complications such as bleeding, infection, airway swelling, persistent throat discomfort, or the need for further treatment can occur.

We minimise these risks by performing a comprehensive pre-operative assessment, using modern surgical techniques, and providing structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is a uvulectomy?

A uvulectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the uvula, the small piece of soft tissue that hangs from the back of the roof of the mouth. It is performed to improve airflow through the throat and relieve certain conditions affecting breathing or throat function.

Why might I need a uvulectomy?

A uvulectomy may be recommended if you have an enlarged or elongated uvula that contributes to chronic snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, persistent throat irritation, gagging, or difficulty swallowing.

How is a uvulectomy performed?

The procedure is carried out through the mouth under local or general anaesthetic, depending on your individual case. Your surgeon carefully removes all or part of the uvula using specialised surgical techniques, leaving no external scars.

Is a uvulectomy painful?

It is normal to experience a sore throat and mild discomfort when swallowing for several days after the procedure. These symptoms are usually well controlled with prescribed pain medication and gradually improve as healing progresses.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients are ready to fly home after 2–3 days. Light daily activities can usually be resumed within a few days, while full recovery typically takes around 2 weeks.

Will a uvulectomy stop snoring?

A uvulectomy can reduce snoring if the uvula is a significant contributing factor. However, snoring may have multiple causes, so your ENT specialist will assess whether this procedure is the most appropriate treatment for you.

Can a uvulectomy treat obstructive sleep apnoea?

In selected patients, a uvulectomy may help improve symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea, particularly when combined with other procedures. Your surgeon will recommend the most suitable treatment based on your airway assessment.

Will my voice or swallowing change after surgery?

Temporary changes in your voice or swallowing are common while the throat heals. In most cases, these resolve as recovery progresses.

Can a uvulectomy be combined with other procedures?

Yes. A uvulectomy is often performed alongside procedures such as tonsillectomy or soft palate surgery to improve airway function and achieve the best possible outcome.
