Mini dental implants in Turkey from South Africa: who they suit
Mini dental implants are narrower than conventional implants and are often used to hold a loose denture in place or to replace a tooth where bone is limited. This page explains, for patients travelling from South Africa, who they suit and who they do not, how long the trip takes and how to look after them once you are home.
In short: Mini dental implants are placed under local anaesthetic and most patients stay in Turkey for three to five days. They can stabilise dentures or replace teeth where bone is limited, often without a bone graft, but they are not right for every case. Take a record of the implants home for your dentist.

What mini implants are
Mini dental implants are titanium implants with a narrower diameter than conventional ones. They can replace single missing teeth, support bridges, or hold a removable denture firmly in place. Because they are smaller, they need less invasive surgery and can sometimes be placed where the jawbone is too limited for a standard implant, which in many cases avoids the need for a bone graft. The treatment is described on our mini dental implants page.
Who they suit, and who they do not
Mini implants may be suitable if you:
- do not have enough jawbone for conventional implants
- want to stop a loose denture from moving
- need a small tooth replaced where a standard implant may not fit
They are not suitable for every full-mouth case. Depending on your oral health and goals, conventional implants or All-on-4 or All-on-6 treatment may be a better option; the dental implants guide for South Africans covers those. If your main concern is a loose denture, the dentures guide explains the alternatives.
The procedure
Placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during treatment. Mild discomfort, swelling or tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days, and many patients return to normal daily activities quickly. Where appropriate, the final restoration or the denture stabilisation can be completed shortly after the implants are placed, depending on your treatment plan.
How long the trip takes
Most patients stay in Turkey for three to five days. Ask before booking whether your plan finishes on the first trip or needs a later visit, and keep your return ticket flexible in case an adjustment is needed.
- Flights: direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place
- Visa: South Africans apply for an e-Visa online before travelling; see the e-Visa guide
- Time difference: İzmir is only one hour ahead of South Africa, so follow-up calls are easy to arrange
- Records: take home a written note of the implant system, the number and position of the implants, and your X-rays or scans
Looking after mini implants in South Africa
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, mini implants can last for many years; how long depends on your oral health, your bite and ongoing maintenance. You will need a dentist at home for routine care, so tell them about the treatment before you travel and book a check-up for after you return. The implant details you bring home let them see exactly what was placed.
Under our treatment guarantee, dental implants are guaranteed for one year from the date they are placed. Covered treatment is carried out in İzmir at no charge, while flights and accommodation remain your own cost, and failures caused by smoking or poor oral hygiene are excluded. The board-certified dental team is listed on clinic facts, and our complaints process is published. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad, so check with both.
What we will not do
We will not recommend mini implants where conventional implants would give you better long-term support, we will not place more implants than your case needs, and we will not start before you have seen and agreed the plan.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in Turkey for mini dental implants?
Most patients stay three to five days, which allows for treatment, follow-up appointments and a check that healing is going well before the flight home.
Who are mini dental implants suitable for?
They may suit patients without enough jawbone for conventional implants, people who want to stabilise loose dentures, or cases where a small tooth needs replacing and a standard implant may not fit. The dentist decides after an assessment.
Are mini dental implants as strong as conventional implants?
They work well in suitable cases but are not right for everyone. Conventional implants may give better long-term support for larger restorations or for people with a heavy bite.
Can mini implants hold my dentures in place?
Yes. Stabilising removable dentures is one of their most common uses, reducing movement while eating and speaking.
What decides the cost of mini dental implants?
The number of implants, whether they hold a denture, a crown or a bridge, whether other treatment is needed first, and what the package includes, such as accommodation and transfers. A firm figure is only possible after an assessment.
