Female hair transplant in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Hair loss in women is common, often distressing and has many possible causes, from genetics and hormonal change to scarring and years of tight styling. A hair transplant can help some women, using FUE or DHI to move follicles into areas of thinning. It is not the answer for every woman, and the first job is to find out why your hair is thinning. This page complements our South African hair transplant guide.

In short: A female hair transplant may help with female pattern hair loss, thinning along the parting or temples, traction alopecia once the cause has stopped, and hair loss from scarring or previous procedures. You need enough healthy donor hair. The procedure usually takes around five to six hours and most patients are cleared to fly after two to three days.

Diagnosis first

Before any plan is made, the clinician reviews your hair loss pattern, donor area, medical history and photographs. In women, thinning is often spread across the scalp, and the donor area may be affected too, which limits what a transplant can achieve. Some causes, such as stress-related shedding or shedding after pregnancy, are usually better treated without surgery.

Non-surgical options include hair PRP, which is given as a course of sessions rather than in one visit.

Traction alopecia and hairstyling

Long-term tension from tight braids, weaves, extensions or wigs can cause hair loss along the hairline and temples. A transplant can sometimes restore these areas, but only once the tension has stopped, and transplanted hair can be lost in the same way if the same styling continues. Tell the clinician about your styling history at the start.

What the procedure involves

Depending on your hair and donor area, the clinician uses FUE or DHI to move follicles into areas such as a widening parting, the temples or the hairline. Health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon come first, and the procedure usually takes around five to six hours.

Who it may suit

  • Women with thinning hair, a widening parting or female pattern hair loss
  • Women with enough healthy donor hair
  • Women in good general health who do not smoke, or can stop before surgery
  • Women who understand that density and the final look cannot be promised

The trip from South Africa

From Johannesburg or Cape Town, a direct flight to Istanbul takes around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place. South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling; our e-Visa guide explains how to apply.

Most patients are cleared to fly after two to three days, subject to the surgeon’s approval; book a return ticket you can change, and follow the advice on scarves, hats and washing.

South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic hair procedures abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Check both before you book.

Recovery and results

Mild redness, swelling and small scabs are normal in the first days, and most scabs fall away within the first week. The transplanted hairs usually shed in weeks two to eight. New growth begins from around three to four months, most patients see clear improvement by nine to twelve months, and the result can keep developing for up to 18 months. Protect the scalp from strong South African sun as instructed; with Turkey one hour ahead, follow-up by photograph is easy.

Risks include swelling, redness, temporary numbness, scabbing, itching, minor bleeding, infection, folliculitis and uneven growth, and some grafts may not survive. Our treatment guarantee covers medical complications and clinically necessary revisions for one year from the treatment date; that treatment is done in İzmir at no charge, but flights and accommodation are your own cost. It does not cover a preference for a different look within what was discussed. Our complaints page explains how problems are handled.

What we will not do

We will not operate before the cause of your hair loss has been considered, take more grafts than your donor area can spare, or promise a density. Our main female hair restoration page has more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can women have a hair transplant?

Yes, if the type of hair loss suits it and there is enough healthy donor hair. Female pattern hair loss, a widening parting, thinning at the temples and some scarring can be treated. Diffuse thinning that affects the donor area often limits what a transplant can do.

Can a hair transplant fix traction alopecia?

Sometimes, but only once the tension from tight braids, weaves, extensions or wigs has stopped. If the same styling continues, transplanted hair can be lost in the same way.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

Most patients are cleared to fly home after two to three days, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Allow time for health checks and a surgeon meeting on arrival.

When will I see results?

Transplanted hairs usually shed in the first weeks. New growth begins from around three to four months, with clear improvement for most patients by nine to twelve months and the result still developing for up to 18 months.

Is there a non-surgical hair loss treatment for women?

Hair PRP may help early thinning and shedding, but it is a course of sessions weeks apart, so it rarely fits one trip from South Africa.
