Hair PRP in Turkey from South Africa: an honest guide
Hair PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a non-surgical treatment that uses a concentrate of your own blood platelets, injected into the scalp, to support existing hair follicles and reduce shedding. It is a course of sessions spread over months, not a single treatment. For South African patients that is the most important fact on this page: one trip to Turkey rarely completes it. This page complements our South African hair transplant guide.
In short: PRP may help early thinning, pattern hair loss, stress-related or postpartum shedding, and recovery after a hair transplant. It does not create new follicles or regrow fully bald areas. A course usually starts with three to four sessions three to four weeks apart, followed by maintenance every six to twelve months, so travelling from South Africa for PRP alone is hard to justify. It fits best alongside a hair transplant trip.

What PRP is and what it can do
A small amount of blood is taken, spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma, and injected into targeted areas of the scalp with fine needles. The aim is to improve the environment around existing follicles, prolong their growth phase and strengthen the hair they produce. Each session usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
PRP is a supportive treatment, not a cure. It works best on follicles that are still active, may do little in advanced hair loss, and its effect needs maintaining.
Who it may suit
- People with early thinning or increased shedding
- Men and women with pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
- People with stress-related shedding (telogen effluvium) or shedding after pregnancy
- People who have had an FUE or DHI transplant and want to support healing
A medical assessment comes first: scalp and density analysis, your medical history, your hair loss pattern and possible underlying causes. You can start with an online consultation before deciding whether to travel.
Why one trip is rarely enough
A typical course is three to four sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, then maintenance sessions every six to twelve months. Completing the initial course in Turkey would mean either staying for two to three months or flying back and forth from South Africa several times, around ten hours each way to Istanbul plus a domestic flight to İzmir. For most people neither makes sense for PRP alone.
Where PRP can make sense is as part of an FUE or DHI hair transplant trip, where it is commonly used before or after the transplant, or when you are in İzmir for other treatment anyway. If you want to continue the course afterwards, discuss with the team whether a qualified practitioner at home could take it over, and take your treatment details with you.
After a session
Downtime is minimal and most people return to normal activities straight away. Mild scalp tenderness, redness at the injection sites and temporary swelling usually settle within 24 to 48 hours. Avoid washing your hair for 24 hours, heavy exercise on the day, and scalp massage for 24 to 48 hours, and follow the practitioner’s own advice.
Results and risks
Results build gradually: reduced shedding is often noticeable within four to eight weeks, improved thickness typically after three to four months, and the maximum effect may take six to nine months. Response varies, and some people with advanced hair loss see none.
PRP is generally safe because it uses your own blood. Possible problems include mild pain or discomfort, temporary swelling or bruising and, rarely, infection. Our treatment guarantee covers medical complications and clinically necessary revisions for one year from the treatment date; that treatment is done in İzmir at no charge, but flights and accommodation are your own cost. It does not cover a preference for a different look within what was discussed. Our complaints page explains how problems are handled.
South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic hair procedures abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Check both before you book.
What we will not do
We will not sell you a single PRP session as if it were a full treatment, promise regrowth in bald areas, or encourage repeated long-haul trips for something that may be better done close to home. Our main hair PRP treatment page has more detail.
Frequently asked questions
How many PRP sessions will I need?
A course usually starts with three to four sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every six to twelve months. The exact number depends on your response and how advanced your hair loss is.
Is it worth travelling from South Africa to Turkey just for hair PRP?
Rarely. Because PRP is a course of sessions weeks apart, one trip does not complete it. It makes more sense alongside a hair transplant or other treatment in İzmir, with any further sessions discussed in advance.
Can PRP regrow hair in bald areas?
PRP works best on existing follicles and early hair loss. It does not create new follicles and may have little effect where hair loss is advanced.
Is hair PRP painful?
Discomfort is generally mild and short-lived, and tenderness or redness usually settles within 24 to 48 hours.
Can PRP be combined with a hair transplant?
Yes. PRP is commonly used before or after an FUE or DHI hair transplant to support healing, which is often the most practical way for South African patients to include it.
