Fat transfer breast augmentation in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Fat transfer breast augmentation uses your own fat, rather than an implant, to add volume to the breasts. It gives a soft, natural-looking but modest increase, and it slims the area the fat is taken from. This page covers who it suits and how to plan the long flight home.

In short: Fat is taken by liposuction, usually from the tummy, flanks or thighs, and injected into the breasts. It suits a modest increase. Some of the fat is absorbed in the first months, so the final size takes three to six months to show. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, and South Africans travel with an e-Visa via Istanbul to İzmir.

What the procedure involves

Fat is taken by liposuction from an area where you have some to spare, usually the abdomen, flanks or thighs. It is purified and injected in small amounts into the breasts. The operation typically takes around two hours.

There is no implant to monitor or replace later, but the increase in size is limited and not all of the fat survives. The full technique is described on the fat transfer breast augmentation page, and the wider options are in our breast surgery guide for South African patients.

Who it suits

  • People who want a subtle to moderate increase in size, not a dramatic change
  • People who have lost breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or with age
  • People with enough spare fat on the tummy, waist, hips or thighs
  • People at a stable weight close to their target
  • Non-smokers, or people able to stop well before surgery, because smoking harms fat survival and healing

If fat transfer alone is unlikely to give the shape or size you want, the surgeon will say so and may suggest a lift or implants instead. See breast augmentation and breast lift for South African patients.

After cancer surgery

Fat transfer is also used to improve breasts reconstructed after a mastectomy, for example to soften the edge of an implant or to even out a reconstruction that has shrunk. If this applies to you, it must be planned with your oncology or breast team at home first, and they should be sent the surgeon’s plan before you travel.

How long to stay, and the flight home

On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon before anything is confirmed. After surgery you recover at Mandarin Grove, our recovery retreat near İzmir, with nurses checking dressings and garments. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval.

  • Wear the surgical bra and the compression garments on the donor areas as instructed, including on the flight
  • Avoid pressure on the breasts during the journey
  • Stand and walk regularly on the ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town, and drink water
  • Ask for a written summary of the operation to give to your GP

Recovery at home

Bruising in the breasts and donor areas settles over the first weeks. For roughly six weeks avoid pressure on the breasts, heavy lifting and upper-body exercise; walking is encouraged. Between three and six months the breasts soften and the final volume becomes clear.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee; it does not cover a preference for a different look where the result is within what was discussed with you, and flights and accommodation for any revision remain your own cost. Facts about the clinic and surgeons are on the clinic facts page, and if something goes wrong you can use our complaints process.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed your photographs and health history, we will not promise a cup size, and we will not take more fat than is safe to reach a target.

Frequently asked questions

How much bigger can fat transfer make my breasts?

Fat transfer suits a modest increase in size rather than a large one. How much fat you have to spare and how much of it survives both set the limit, and the surgeon will tell you honestly if implants or a lift would suit your goal better.

Will all the transferred fat stay?

No. Some of the transferred fat is naturally absorbed by the body in the first months. The fat that survives becomes part of the breast, and the final volume is usually clearer between three and six months.

How long after fat transfer can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but the surgeon decides. Because the flight home takes around ten hours, book a return ticket you can change.

What happens if I gain or lose weight later?

Transferred fat behaves like fat elsewhere in your body, so a large change in weight can change the size of the breasts. Being at a stable weight before surgery and keeping it afterwards helps protect the result.

Will my medical aid cover fat transfer breast augmentation?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic breast surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. Ask both specifically before you book.
