Tonsillectomy in Turkey

A tonsillectomy is one of the most effective procedures for removing chronically infected or enlarged tonsils, helping to reduce recurring throat infections, relieve breathing and swallowing difficulties, improve sleep quality, and restore overall throat health.

Most patients are ready to fly home after 3–5 days, with a return to light daily activities within 1–2 weeks. A sore throat gradually improves over the first 10–14 days, with full recovery typically taking around 2 weeks.

THE PROCEDURE

What is tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils, helping to reduce recurring throat infections, relieve breathing and swallowing difficulties, and improve overall throat health and quality of life.

The tonsils are two masses of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the throat. When they become chronically infected or enlarged, they can cause recurrent tonsillitis, sore throats, difficulty swallowing, bad breath, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnoea. During a tonsillectomy, the tonsils are removed through the mouth under general anaesthetic, leaving no visible external scars. The procedure is commonly recommended when symptoms are frequent, severe, or significantly affect daily life.

At Revitalize in Turkey, every tonsillectomy is performed by experienced ENT surgeons using modern surgical techniques and supported by comprehensive aftercare. We provide international patients with safe, effective treatment and a smooth recovery experience from arrival through to their return home.

RECOVERY

Tonsillectomy recovery timeline

Days 1–3: A sore throat, difficulty swallowing, ear pain (referred pain), and mild swelling are common during the first few days after surgery and can be managed with prescribed pain relief. It is important to stay well hydrated and eat soft, cool foods to support healing.

Days 4–7: The throat may become more uncomfortable as the healing process continues, and a white coating over the surgical area is a normal part of recovery. Most patients can carry out light daily activities but should continue to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, smoking, and alcohol. Most patients are fit to fly home after 3–5 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–3: The throat gradually heals, swallowing becomes easier, and discomfort continues to improve. Most patients can return to work, school, and normal daily activities, although strenuous exercise should only be resumed once advised by their surgeon.

Weeks 3–4: Healing is typically complete, with throat discomfort resolved and normal eating and drinking restored. Most patients can resume all normal activities without restrictions once cleared by their surgeon.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

A tonsillectomy is a well-established procedure, but like any surgery, it carries risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, ear pain (referred pain), temporary changes in taste, dehydration, or delayed healing. More rarely, complications such as bleeding, infection, reactions to anaesthesia, or the need for further treatment can occur.

We minimise these risks by performing a comprehensive pre-operative assessment, using modern surgical techniques, and providing structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is a tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils. It is commonly performed to treat recurrent tonsillitis, enlarged tonsils, obstructive sleep apnoea, or ongoing throat problems that do not respond to other treatments.

Why might I need a tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy may be recommended if you experience frequent episodes of tonsillitis, persistent sore throats, enlarged tonsils causing difficulty swallowing or breathing, loud snoring, or obstructive sleep apnoea.

How is a tonsillectomy performed?

The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. The tonsils are removed through the mouth using specialised surgical techniques, so there are no external incisions or visible scars.

Is a tonsillectomy painful?

Yes. A sore throat is expected after surgery, and many patients also experience ear pain (referred pain). These symptoms are temporary and are usually well controlled with prescribed pain medication.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients are ready to fly home after 3–5 days. Light daily activities can usually be resumed within 1–2 weeks, while full recovery typically takes around 2 weeks.

When can I return to work or school?

Most patients return to work, school, or their usual daily routine within 2 weeks, depending on how quickly they recover and the nature of their activities.

What can I eat after a tonsillectomy?

Your surgeon will recommend drinking plenty of fluids and gradually returning to a normal diet. Soft, cool foods are usually more comfortable during the first few days, and it is best to avoid very hot, spicy, or sharp foods until the throat has healed.

What are the signs of bleeding after surgery?

A small amount of blood-tinged saliva can occasionally occur, but fresh red bleeding from the mouth or throat is not normal and requires immediate medical attention. Our team will explain exactly what to look out for before you leave the hospital.

Can a tonsillectomy improve sleep?

Yes. If enlarged tonsils are contributing to snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea, removing them can significantly improve breathing during sleep and overall sleep quality.
