ABOUT
About Dr. Özgün Akgül
Dr. Özgün Akgül is a general and bariatric surgeon whose practice centres on obesity and metabolic surgery. Born in Kayseri in 1983, he graduated from Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in 2007 and began his specialist training in General Surgery at İzmir Katip Çelebi University Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2009, qualifying as a General Surgery Specialist in 2014. In 2015 he was awarded the Surgical Proficiency Certificate (Cerrahi Yeterlilik Belgesi) — a voluntary board-style qualification that surgeons are not required to hold, and which signals a deliberate commitment to professional standards beyond the statutory minimum.
After qualifying he worked at Bornova Türkan Özilhan State Hospital until 2016, then at the Kordon Obesity Centre and Private Ege Şehir Hospital — the obesity-centre posting being where his bariatric focus consolidated. He has practised at his own clinic in Izmir since 2019.
His surgical philosophy treats bariatric surgery as a comprehensive health intervention rather than a weight-reduction procedure. The aim is improved quality of life, greater life expectancy, and reduction of the long-term risks that come with obesity — diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea and metabolic syndrome among them.
One detail sets his practice apart in a field where it matters: his clinic runs a two-year follow-up programme for every patient. Bariatric surgery is not a one-off event — sustained results depend on nutritional guidance and support long after the operation, and a two-year structured commitment is considerably more than many providers offer. His team includes English- and German-speaking members, and he treats patients from across Europe and beyond.
TECHNIQUE
Minimally Invasive Approach
Dr. Akgül uses laparoscopic (keyhole) technique wherever clinically appropriate. Compared with open surgery, this generally means:
- Reduced post-operative discomfort
- Smaller incisions and improved cosmetic outcomes
- Faster recovery and shorter hospital stays
- Earlier return to daily activities
- Lower complication rates
