Ponytail facelift in Turkey from South Africa: who it suits and what to expect
A ponytail facelift lifts the upper and middle face, raising the cheeks and the outer brows through small, hidden incisions. It is aimed at earlier signs of ageing, not at jowls or a loose neck. This page explains how it differs from a standard facelift, who it suits and what South African patients should plan for before travelling to İzmir.
In short: A ponytail facelift lifts the brows, cheeks and mid-face, with incisions inside the mouth and at the temples, so scars are hidden. It is usually considered from around the age of 30 for mild to moderate sagging. Initial recovery takes two to three weeks, and most patients are cleared to fly five to seven days after surgery, subject to the surgeon’s approval.

How it differs from a standard facelift
A standard (SMAS) facelift works mainly on the lower face, jowls and jawline, with incisions around the ear. A ponytail facelift works higher up, on the temples, brows and cheeks, through incisions in the mouth and at the temples. It gives a subtler lift with less visible scarring.
The trade-off is reach. A ponytail facelift does not correct jowls, significant skin laxity or an ageing neck. If those are your main concerns, a SMAS facelift, possibly with a neck lift, is usually the more suitable option. The comparison is set out on the ponytail facelift treatment page.
Who it suits
- People with early to moderate facial ageing, usually from around 30 onwards
- Hooded skin under the outer part of the eyebrows that makes you look tired
- Flat or hollow-looking cheeks when your face is at rest
- Eyebrow tails that droop at the sides of the eyes
If your concern is mainly the outer brow and temple, a temporal lift may also be worth discussing, and the mid-facelift focuses on the cheeks. The surgeon decides which suits you from your photographs and an examination; see our facial surgery guide for South African patients for all options.
What happens in Turkey
You send photographs from several angles and describe what bothers you. After review you receive a written plan. On arrival in İzmir you meet the surgeon in person and have the health checks needed before surgery. Nothing is confirmed until that assessment is done.
Recovery, and the flight home
Initial recovery takes about two to three weeks. Expect swelling and bruising around the temples, cheeks and eyes in the first days; incisions inside the mouth may make eating feel strange for a while, so ask the surgeon what to eat and how to keep the mouth clean. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days.
- Book a return ticket you can change
- On the roughly ten-hour flight, keep your head raised, move regularly and drink water
- Sunglasses and a hat hide bruising and protect healing skin from strong sun
- Plan time off work and avoid strenuous exercise until the surgeon clears you
Risks
Like any facial surgery, a ponytail facelift can cause swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, asymmetry, infection or scarring, and occasionally needs further treatment. The surgeon should explain your own risks and what to watch for after you get home.
Our treatment guarantee covers surgical treatment for one year: medical complications and any revision the treating team judges clinically necessary are treated in İzmir at no charge, though flights and accommodation are your own cost.
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP informed and take your operation notes home. See our clinic facts and complaints process.
Cost and cover
The cost depends on the technique, any combined procedures and the length of your stay; your written plan sets out what is included. Medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery.
What we will not do
We will not recommend a ponytail facelift where your jowls or neck need a different operation, we will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, and we will not promise a result.
