Male upper eyelid surgery in Turkey from South Africa

Heavy or hooded upper eyelids can make a man look tired even after a good night’s sleep. Upper eyelid surgery removes the excess skin and, where needed, some fat, to give a more open look without changing your character. Here is what South African patients need to plan.

In short: The operation usually takes 45 to 90 minutes. Most patients are ready to fly after five to seven days, and most return to work within one to two weeks. South Africans need an e-Visa and fly via Istanbul to İzmir. The surgeon confirms suitability and the date you can travel.

What the operation involves

The surgeon removes loose upper eyelid skin and, if it is part of the problem, adjusts some of the fat beneath it. In men the aim is a cleaner lid with the natural fold kept low, avoiding a hollow or overcorrected look. The plan also takes account of your brow position.

The UK page is male upper eyelid surgery, and the lower lids are covered on our male eye bag removal page.

Who it suits

  • Men with drooping or hooded upper eyelid skin that makes them look tired
  • Men whose eyes look heavy or less open because of excess skin
  • Men in good general health who do not smoke or can stop before surgery
  • Men with realistic expectations about the result

Suitability is confirmed after a medical assessment. If your eyelid skin is heavy enough to block your vision, an eye specialist at home can tell you whether it is a functional problem. Other procedures for men are in our male cosmetic surgery guide for South African patients.

Recovery and the flight home

On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a meeting with the surgeon. Patients then recover at Mandarin Grove, our recovery retreat near İzmir, with nursing support and follow-up checks.

  • Days 1–3: keep your head raised; swelling, bruising and tightness are normal, and cold compresses may help
  • Days 4–7: swelling eases; most patients resume light activity and are cleared to fly in this window
  • Weeks 2–6: most of the swelling settles and most men are back at work within one to two weeks

The flight from Istanbul to Johannesburg or Cape Town takes around ten hours. Cabin air is dry, so ask the surgeon whether to use eye drops on the flight. Wear good sunglasses in strong South African sun while the eyelids heal.

Risks to know about

Upper eyelid surgery is a well-established procedure, but it still carries risks: swelling, bruising, temporary dry eyes, asymmetry and delayed wound healing, and more rarely bleeding, infection, a change in eyelid position or the need for revision surgery. The surgeon explains your own risk before you agree to anything.

What decides the cost, and who pays

The written quotation you receive after a surgeon has reviewed your photographs lists what is included and what is not. What decides the cost is whether fat needs adjusting as well as skin, whether another procedure such as eye bag removal is added, and the number of nights you need in İzmir. Our pricing is transparent.

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment, so check with both.

Guarantee and follow-up from home

Our treatment guarantee covers surgical treatment for one year: medical complications and any revision the treating team judges clinically necessary are treated in İzmir at no charge, though flights and accommodation are your own cost. It does not cover a preference for a different look within what was discussed beforehand.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call; İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP informed and take your operation notes home. See our clinic facts and complaints process.

What we will not do

We will not confirm surgery before a board-certified surgeon has assessed you, we will not promise a particular look, and we will not combine procedures just because you have travelled far.

Frequently asked questions

How long after upper eyelid surgery can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are ready to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Ask the surgeon about eye drops for the dry cabin air on the long flight.

Will people be able to tell I have had surgery?

Bruising and swelling are visible for the first days and settle over the following weeks. The aim is a natural, masculine eyelid rather than an obviously operated look, but no particular result can be guaranteed.

When can I go back to work?

Most men return to work and normal daily activities within one to two weeks. Strenuous exercise waits until the surgeon clears you.

Can upper and lower eyelid surgery be done together?

Sometimes. The surgeon decides whether combining them is safe and sensible for you after assessing both areas.

Will my medical aid cover it?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment. Check with both before you book.
