Braces in Turkey from South Africa: what decides the cost, and how many visits you need
Braces use brackets and a wire to move teeth gradually into a better position. They can correct crowding, gaps, crooked teeth and bite problems such as an overbite, underbite or crossbite. Unlike veneers, braces are not finished in one trip: they stay on for months and need regular adjustments. From South Africa, that shapes both the cost and the plan.
In short: Fitting braces in Turkey takes one short trip, but treatment usually runs for 12 to 24 months with regular adjustments in between. Before you book, agree in writing who will do those adjustments: an orthodontist in South Africa, scheduled return visits to İzmir, or a mix. That decision affects the total cost more than almost anything else.

What decides the cost of braces
There is no fair single figure for braces; the total depends on your case and on how treatment is followed up. The main factors are:
- How complex your case is. Mild crowding needs less work than a significant bite problem, and treatment usually lasts 12 to 24 months.
- The type of braces. Options include traditional metal braces and ceramic braces; the orthodontist recommends one after assessment.
- Who does the adjustments. Return trips add flights and accommodation; an orthodontist in South Africa charges separately.
- What the package includes. Packages can cover accommodation and transfers as well as treatment; check what yours includes in writing.
- What happens after the braces come off. Most people need retainers afterwards to hold the teeth in place; ask whether these are included.
A firm figure is only possible after an orthodontic assessment. Our pricing is transparent, so ask for a written proposal that shows exactly what is included.
How many visits braces need, and why it matters from South Africa
The first visit in Turkey covers an examination, digital scans and X-rays where needed, and the fitting of the braces. Most patients fly home shortly afterwards. The brace then needs adjusting regularly, typically every few weeks, for the whole treatment. With around ten hours from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul, plus a short flight to İzmir, flying back for every adjustment is rarely practical.
That leaves three realistic plans, which the orthodontist will discuss with you:
- Adjustments in South Africa. An orthodontist at home agrees, before fitting, to take over routine adjustments. Not every orthodontist will take on a case started elsewhere, so ask yours first.
- Scheduled visits to İzmir. Fewer, planned trips at key stages, with the dates agreed at the start.
- A mix of both. Routine checks at home, with a return visit for specific stages.
Whether treatment can be continued at home depends on your case and on the orthodontist managing it. Agree the follow-up plan before any bracket is placed, not after.
Who braces suit
Braces may suit you if your teeth are crowded, crooked or spaced, or your bite is off, and you will keep up careful cleaning and every adjustment. Suitability is confirmed only after an examination with scans or X-rays. If braces are not the best fit, the orthodontist may recommend clear aligners or another option. For an overview of straightening options, see our orthodontics guide for South African patients, and the treatment itself is described on the dental braces page. Our dentists are listed on clinic facts.
Planning the trip
- South African passport holders apply for a Turkish e-Visa before travelling.
- Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa, so jet lag is not a factor.
- Take your scans and written treatment plan home for your orthodontist.
- Travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad, and South African medical schemes generally do not cover treatment abroad; check with your scheme.
What our treatment guarantee covers, and what it does not, is set out on that page. The guarantee does not cover treatment carried out by another provider after you return home, which matters if your adjustments are done in South Africa. How complaints are handled is published on our complaints page.
What we will not do
We will not fit braces before the follow-up plan is agreed in writing, and we will not suggest fixed braces if a simpler option suits your case.
Frequently asked questions
What decides the cost of braces for South African patients?
The complexity of your case and how long treatment lasts, the type of braces, who does the adjustments and how often you travel, what the package includes, and retainers afterwards. A firm figure is only possible after an orthodontic assessment.
How many visits do braces need?

Who adjusts my braces when I am back in South Africa?
Agree that before fitting. Ask an orthodontist at home whether they will take over routine adjustments; if not, plan scheduled visits to İzmir.
