Tuberous breast correction in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Tuberous breast correction reshapes breasts that developed with a narrow, constricted base, often with puffy areolas and uneven sides. It is more involved than a standard augmentation because it corrects the shape of the breast itself, not only its size. This page explains the options, who they suit, and how South African patients can plan the trip and the long flight home.

In short: Correction is planned around your anatomy and may combine reshaping of the breast tissue, areola reduction, a lift and implants. The operation typically takes around two to three hours. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. South Africans travel with an e-Visa via Istanbul to İzmir, and follow-up continues remotely.

What correction can involve

Tuberous breast correction is not a single operation but a plan built around your anatomy. The surgeon may combine several techniques:

  • Reshaping the breast tissue — releasing the constricted base so the lower breast can fill out
  • Areola reduction — reducing enlarged or puffy areolas
  • A breast lift — repositioning the breast where it sits low
  • Implants — adding volume where tissue is lacking or to balance the two sides

The operation typically takes around two to three hours. More detail is on the tuberous breast correction page, and related procedures are in our breast surgery guide for South African patients.

Who it suits

  • People with a narrow breast base or underdeveloped lower breast tissue
  • People with noticeably uneven breasts or puffy, enlarged areolas
  • People in good general health who do not smoke, or can stop before surgery
  • People with realistic expectations: the aim is a more balanced shape, not two identical breasts

Because uneven breasts can sometimes have other causes, the surgeon reviews your history and photographs before confirming that correction is right for you.

How long to stay, and the flight home

You meet your surgeon face to face and have health checks and blood tests before the operation. Afterwards you recover at Mandarin Grove, our recovery retreat near İzmir. Drains, if used, usually come out between days four and seven, and most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval.

  • Wear your surgical bra continuously, including on the flight
  • Book an aisle seat, walk regularly on the ten-hour flight and drink water
  • Ask someone to lift your luggage
  • If implants are used, take home the implant card and a record of brand, size and placement

Recovery at home

Swelling settles over the first weeks, and implants, if used, gradually drop into position. Avoid heavy lifting, upper-body workouts and strenuous exercise until the surgeon clears you, usually after around six weeks. The breasts keep softening and the final shape becomes clear between three and six months.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team, and Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee; it does not cover a preference for a different look where the result is within what was discussed with you, and flights and accommodation for any revision remain your own cost. Facts about the clinic and surgeons are on the clinic facts page, and if something goes wrong you can use our complaints process.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise perfect symmetry, and we will not use implants larger than your tissue can safely support. If a staged approach is safer, the surgeon will tell you.

Frequently asked questions

What are tuberous breasts?

Tuberous, or constricted, breasts have a narrow base, underdeveloped lower breast tissue and often enlarged or puffy areolas, and the two sides are frequently uneven. It is a difference in how the breast developed, not something you caused.

Will I need implants?

Not always. Depending on your anatomy, correction may involve reshaping the breast tissue, reducing the areolas, a lift, implants, or a combination. The surgeon decides after reviewing your photographs and examining you.

How long is the operation?

Tuberous breast correction typically takes around two to three hours. It is planned individually, so your surgeon will confirm the expected length for your case.

How long after surgery can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Because the flight home takes around ten hours, book a return ticket you can change.

Will my medical aid cover tuberous breast correction?

Ask your scheme directly. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective breast surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery, so do not assume either will pay.
