Mummy makeover in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

A mummy makeover, also called a mommy makeover, is not one operation. It is a combination, usually a tummy tuck with breast surgery and liposuction, put together for the changes pregnancy left behind. For South African patients, what needs extra planning is the length of stay, the ten-hour flight home and help with the children afterwards.

In short: South Africans can have a mummy makeover in Turkey with an e-Visa and a direct Turkish Airlines flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul, around ten hours, then a short domestic flight to İzmir. Which procedures are combined, and whether all are safe in one operation, is decided by the surgeon after reviewing your photographs, medical history and blood tests. Plan for a longer stay than for a single procedure.

What a mummy makeover combines

Most plans combine:

  • Tummy tuck — loose skin and fat removed from the abdomen, usually with repair of separated muscles
  • Breast surgery — a lift, an augmentation, or a lift with implants
  • Liposuction — extra fat removed from selected areas

The plan is personalised, not a fixed package. Each operation is explained on the mummy makeover treatment page, and the abdominal part in our tummy tuck guide for South Africans.

The combination is a surgical decision

The surgeon decides which combination is safe in one operation, and whether some of it should wait for a second visit. Long combined operations carry more anaesthetic and blood-loss risk, and blood test results on the day can change the plan. From South Africa, a staged plan can mean a second trip, so ask how that would work before you book.

Timing: children, weight and medication

  • Finish having children first. A later pregnancy can undo much of the result.
  • Be at a stable weight. A high BMI raises the risk of wound problems.
  • Tell us about weight-loss injections. Mounjaro, Wegovy and similar medication must be paused before anaesthesia. See Mounjaro before a tummy tuck.
  • Allow time after breastfeeding. Breast size and shape need to have settled before breast surgery is planned.

How long to stay, and the flight home

After the hospital stay, patients recover at Mandarin Grove near İzmir. A combined operation and a ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town both raise the risk of blood clots, so the surgeon decides when you are fit to fly, and South African patients may be asked to stay longer. Book a return ticket you can change.

  • Wear your compression garment and any stockings you are given on the flight
  • Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
  • Tell us at the start about any history of clots, smoking or hormone medication

Recovery and childcare at home

Light walking is encouraged early, but heavy lifting, core exercise and lifting small children are off limits for several weeks after a tummy tuck, until the surgeon clears you. Arrange childcare and help at home before you travel, and plan for more time off work than for a single procedure.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee, and our complaints procedure is public. Keep your GP informed, and ask us before you book how follow-up would work in your city.

What decides the cost

The combination decides the cost: an extended or 360 tummy tuck instead of a standard one, implants with a lift, more liposuction areas, or further procedures. Ask any provider to confirm in writing:

  • Exactly which procedures are included, and which type of tummy tuck
  • The implant brand and type, if implants are planned
  • Blood tests, hospital nights, accommodation, transfers and compression garments
  • What happens if part of the plan is postponed on medical grounds
  • Who you contact, and who pays, if a problem appears after you return home

Flights, childcare and time off work sit outside any quote. South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic surgery, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery abroad. See our clinic facts.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a result, and we will not put more into one operation than the surgeon judges safe. A long journey is not a reason to add procedures. Several mothers describe their own mummy makeovers in our patient video interviews.

Frequently asked questions

How long after a mummy makeover can I fly home to South Africa?

The surgeon decides. A combined operation and a flight of around ten hours both raise the risk of blood clots, so South African patients may be asked to stay longer than for a single procedure.

Can all the procedures be done in one operation?

Not always. The surgeon decides which combination is safe in one operation, and blood test results on the day can change the plan. Some procedures may need to wait for a second visit.

How soon after having a baby can I have a mummy makeover?

Wait until you have finished having children and are at a stable weight, and allow time after breastfeeding for breast size and shape to settle.

When can I lift my children again?

Lifting small children is off limits for several weeks after a tummy tuck, until the surgeon clears you. Arrange childcare and help at home before you travel.

Will my medical aid cover a mummy makeover?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic surgery, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery abroad. Ask both specifically.
