Hernia repair in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

A hernia is tissue, or part of an organ, pushing through a weak spot in the muscle or tissue that should hold it in place. Repair puts the tissue back and closes or reinforces the weak area. This page explains the types of hernia repair we arrange in İzmir, who is suitable for planned surgery abroad, and how to plan the stay and the long flight home to South Africa.

In short: Hernia repair in Turkey is arranged for umbilical (belly button), inguinal (groin) and hiatus hernias, by open or keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. The operation usually takes one to two hours, and most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. A hernia that suddenly becomes painful, hard or cannot be pushed back is an emergency and must be treated in South Africa immediately.

Types of hernia repair

The techniques are also described on our hernia repair surgery page. Hernia repair is part of our general surgery guide for South African patients.

Who is suitable for planned repair

  • You have a lump in the abdomen, groin or around the belly button that shows more when you stand, cough or lift
  • The hernia causes pain, pressure or discomfort in daily life
  • A doctor has already diagnosed the hernia
  • You are in good general health and fit for surgery

The surgeon confirms suitability after reviewing your symptoms, history and any scans, and recommends open or laparoscopic surgery. Mesh is often used to strengthen the repair and lower the chance of the hernia coming back.

When not to travel

If a hernia suddenly becomes very painful, turns hard or discoloured, cannot be pushed back in, or comes with vomiting or a swollen abdomen, get emergency care in South Africa straight away. These can be signs that the bowel is trapped, which cannot wait for a trip abroad.

The stay in Turkey and the flight home

On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon. The operation usually takes one to two hours. You are encouraged to walk gently soon afterwards, and your wound is checked before discharge. Patients then recover at Mandarin Grove, our recovery retreat near İzmir, between check-ups. Most are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but the surgeon decides and may ask you to stay longer before a ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town. Book a return ticket you can change.

  • Choose an aisle seat, walk regularly on the flight and drink water
  • Ask for help with luggage, and tell us early about any history of blood clots

Recovery at home

Light activity, and for many people work, is usually possible within one to two weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise wait until the surgeon clears you. The repaired wall keeps strengthening over two to three months, when most patients return to all normal activity with the surgeon’s approval.

Follow-up continues by message and video call with the same team; Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa. Tell your GP before you travel, and take your operation note and any mesh details home. Under our treatment guarantee, complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are treated in İzmir at no charge for that treatment; flights and accommodation are your own cost. Risks

Like any operation, hernia repair carries risks: pain, swelling and bruising, wound infection, bleeding, fluid collection (seroma), the hernia coming back, and more rarely injury to nearby structures, blood clots or mesh-related problems. The surgeon discusses these with you before you agree.

Cost and cover

Pricing is transparent and set out in writing after a surgeon has reviewed your records; it depends mainly on the technique and the length of stay. Medical schemes generally do not cover planned treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes it, so check both before booking.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not encourage you to travel with a hernia that needs urgent care, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. We will not promise that a hernia will never come back.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of hernia repair do I need?

That depends on where the hernia is. Umbilical hernias are at the belly button, inguinal hernias are in the groin, and a hiatus hernia is where the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm. The surgeon confirms the type from your examination and scans.

Is hernia repair done by keyhole or open surgery?

Both are used. The surgeon recommends open or laparoscopic repair according to your hernia and your health. Mesh is often used to strengthen the repair.

How long after hernia repair can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but the surgeon decides. Because the flight home takes around ten hours, you may be asked to stay a little longer.

What if my hernia becomes painful before the trip?

A hernia that suddenly becomes very painful, hard or cannot be pushed back needs emergency care in South Africa straight away. Do not wait for your planned travel date.

Will my medical aid pay for hernia repair in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover planned treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes it. Ask your scheme before booking; we cannot promise cover.
