Back lift in Turkey from South Africa: what to expect
A back lift removes loose, folded skin from the upper or lower back and, where needed, some stubborn fat, so the back looks smoother and clothes sit more comfortably. It is usually chosen after major weight loss or because skin has loosened with age. For South African patients the surgery is the same as for anyone else; the extra planning is around the stay in İzmir and the long flight home.
In short: A back lift treats loose skin that diet and exercise cannot shift. The operation typically takes around two hours, and most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Because the trip home to Johannesburg or Cape Town involves a flight of around ten hours, plan for a flexible return date.

What a back lift does
The surgeon removes excess skin across the back, and sometimes fat as well, then closes the skin so it lies flatter.
If liposuction alone, or a back lift combined with liposuction, would suit you better, the surgeon will say so. If your loose skin carries round the whole waist, a body lift or 360 tummy tuck may be the better fit. All the details are on the back lift treatment page.
Who it suits
- People with loose or sagging back skin after significant weight loss or with age
- People close to their ideal weight who can keep it stable after surgery
- Non-smokers, or people able to stop before surgery
- People in good general health with realistic expectations of the result and the scar
Suitability is confirmed only after a medical review of your history, photographs and goals.
How the trip works
You send photographs and goals first; on arrival in İzmir you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face surgeon meeting. Back lift surgery is performed by board-certified plastic surgeons, and after the operation you have nursing support, dressing changes and structured follow-up. Patients recover at Mandarin Grove, the recovery retreat, with 24/7 access to the medical team.
South Africans need an e-Visa; direct flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town reach Istanbul in around ten hours, then a short domestic flight goes to İzmir.
How long to stay, and the flight home
In the first three days you rest; discomfort, swelling, bruising and tightness across the back are expected. If drains are used, they are usually removed between days four and seven, and you wear a compression garment. Most patients can fly after five to seven days, but the surgeon decides. Sitting for ten hours soon after body surgery raises the risk of blood clots, so the surgeon may ask you to stay longer and will tell you what precautions to take.
- Wear your compression garment on the flight, as the surgeon advises
- Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
- Ask for help with luggage rather than lifting it yourself
- Tell us at the start about any history of blood clots, smoking or hormone medication
Recovery at home
From the second to the sixth week, swelling keeps going down and normal daily life returns gradually. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and movements that pull on the back wait until the surgeon clears them. Over three to six months the back settles into its final shape and the scars soften and fade. A stable weight keeps the result.
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call; İzmir is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Tell your GP before you travel and take your operation notes home. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year of treatment are covered by our treatment guarantee; flights and accommodation for any return visit are your own responsibility. What decides the cost
The extent of loose skin, any added liposuction and the length of stay shape the quote, which is transparent and given in writing. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment, so check with both.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, promise a result, or operate if your weight or health makes it unsafe. A long journey is not a reason to add more procedures to one operation than the surgeon judges safe.
Frequently asked questions
How long after a back lift can I fly home to South Africa?
The surgeon decides. Most back lift patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours, you may be asked to stay longer.
Will a back lift leave a scar?
Yes. Removing skin always leaves a scar. The surgeon plans where it sits, and it softens and fades over the following months.
Can a back lift be combined with liposuction?
Yes, where the surgeon judges it suitable. If liposuction alone would suit you better, you will be told.
When can I exercise again after a back lift?
Light activity returns within the first weeks, but heavy lifting and strenuous exercise wait until the surgeon confirms it is safe, usually after several weeks.
Will my medical aid pay for it?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment. Ask your scheme and insurer directly before you book.
