THE PROCEDURE

What is SMAS facelift?

A SMAS facelift rejuvenates the face by lifting and repositioning the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), restoring youthful contours to the cheeks, jawline, and lower face while maintaining natural facial expressions. It is particularly effective for patients with moderate facial ageing, jowls, and loss of jawline definition.

At Revitalize in Turkey, every SMAS facelift is tailored to your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. Our experienced plastic surgeons use advanced techniques to achieve natural-looking rejuvenation, combining exceptional surgical expertise with comprehensive aftercare and outstanding value.

SUITABILITY

Are you a candidate for SMAS facelift?

A SMAS facelift may be right for you if you:

  • Have sagging cheeks, jowls, or loss of jawline definition

  • Would like a natural-looking, long-lasting improvement to the lower face

  • Are in good general health, a non-smoker (or able to stop before surgery), and have realistic expectations about the results

  • Want more comprehensive facial rejuvenation than non-surgical treatments can provide

Candidacy is always confirmed following a comprehensive medical assessment of your health, facial anatomy, photographs, and aesthetic goals. If a SMAS facelift is not the most suitable option, we’ll recommend the treatment that best meets your individual needs.

RECOVERY

SMAS facelift recovery timeline

Days 1–3: Rest with your head elevated to help minimise swelling. Mild discomfort, swelling, bruising, and tightness around the face and neck are expected during this period. Cold compresses may be recommended to help reduce swelling.

Days 4–7: Swelling and bruising begin to improve, although the face may still feel tight. Most patients feel comfortable resuming light daily activities and are typically able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–6: The majority of swelling gradually subsides, revealing a smoother, more defined jawline and youthful facial contours. Most patients return to work and normal daily activities within 2 weeks, while strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by your surgeon.

Months 3–6: The tissues continue to settle, incision lines gradually soften and fade, and the final results become fully visible, providing long-lasting, natural-looking facial rejuvenation.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

A SMAS facelift is a well-established procedure, but like any operation, it carries potential risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, asymmetry, scarring, delayed wound healing, and—more rarely—bleeding, infection, nerve irritation, skin healing problems, or the need for revision surgery.

We minimise these risks through a comprehensive pre-operative assessment, meticulous surgical planning, advanced surgical techniques, and structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a smooth and safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is a SMAS facelift?

A SMAS facelift is a surgical procedure that lifts and repositions the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), restoring youthful contours to the cheeks, jawline, and lower face while maintaining a natural appearance.

How is a SMAS facelift different from a deep plane facelift?

A SMAS facelift lifts and tightens the SMAS layer without fully releasing the deeper facial ligaments. A deep plane facelift goes deeper, allowing greater repositioning of the mid-face tissues and often providing more comprehensive rejuvenation for advanced ageing.

Who is a good candidate for a SMAS facelift?

A SMAS facelift is ideal for patients with moderate facial ageing, jowls, sagging cheeks, and loss of jawline definition who want long-lasting, natural-looking results.

How long does the procedure take?

A SMAS facelift typically takes 3–5 hours, depending on whether it is combined with other facial procedures.

Can a SMAS facelift be combined with other procedures?

Yes. It is commonly combined with a neck lift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), brow lift, facial fat grafting, or lip lift for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

How long is the recovery?

Most patients are able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon's approval. Most swelling and bruising improve within the first few weeks, while the final results continue to refine over several months.

Will I look natural?

Yes. By lifting the deeper support layer rather than simply tightening the skin, a SMAS facelift is designed to produce refreshed, natural-looking results without a "pulled" appearance.

How long do the results last?

While the ageing process continues, the results of a SMAS facelift typically last 8–12 years, depending on factors such as skin quality, lifestyle, and genetics.

Will there be visible scars?

Incisions are carefully placed around the ears and within the hairline where possible, allowing scars to become discreet as they heal.

Is a SMAS facelift right for me?

If you have moderate facial ageing but do not require the more extensive correction of a deep plane facelift, a SMAS facelift may be an excellent option. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate facelift technique based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals.
