      PRK Surgery in Turkey

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser surgical procedure performed to reshape the cornea of the eye to improve low to moderate hyperopia (nearsightedness), myopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During PRK, one of the most preferred types of laser eye surgery, the epithelial layer is separated from the cornea. As a result of the reshaping of the cornea, the patient begins to see perfectly.

      Advantages of PRK

PRK eye surgery is an operation in which the surgeon has high control to shape the cornea. In LASIK surgery, the cornea must be cut with a laser, while in PRK, the strength of the cornea is preserved. This is because the surgeon does not cut the cornea, but rather shapes it extensively.

No corneal flap complication develops as a result of photorefractive keratectomy surgery.

PRK surgery is also suitable for thin corneas. Especially people with very thin corneas or people with very large pupils should definitely prefer PRK surgery treatment. People who are likely to get a blow to their eyes, such as athletes, also prefer photorefractive keratectomy surgery.

PRK prevents both corneal ectasia, which causes complications such as permanent vision loss or impaired vision, and complications from corneal flaps. This increases the likelihood that the surgery will be successful.

How is PRK Eye Surgery Performed?

If you have decided to have PRK surgery, you should have some information about how the procedure progresses. Before photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) surgery, the eyes are anesthetized with anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon begins using excimer laser energy to reshape the corneas. Your surgeon will have high control over the laser and will accurately shape the cornea with precision and delicacy.

PRK surgery takes a few minutes in total. In a standard procedure, one eye is operated first, the eye is allowed to heal completely, and then the second eye is operated. Because there is a high probability of blurry vision for a while after PRK surgery.

The eyes are bandaged with a soft contact lens to protect the cornea shaped by the surgeon during the surgery. In a few days, new and healthy cells replace the cells that deteriorate the vision removed from the cornea by the surgeon. At the next first follow-up examination, the contact lens is removed from the patient’s eye by the surgeon.

      Recovery After Photorefractive Keratectomy

After PRK surgery, patients get rid of visual disturbances. However, patients may have to wear glasses until their vision stabilizes. Eye drops are prescribed by the surgeon to keep the eyes moist and prevent infection.

While eyesight improves immediately after surgery, it takes a few days to a few weeks to see definitive results and to fully recover. Patients should avoid heavy training for at least a week. On average, within 1 to 3 weeks, the eyesight is completely recovered.
