THE PROCEDURE

What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a specialised procedure designed to restore the shape, volume, and appearance of the breast following mastectomy, breast cancer treatment, injury, or other conditions that have affected the breast tissue.

Unlike cosmetic breast augmentation, breast reconstruction focuses on rebuilding the breast to restore symmetry, body balance, and confidence after significant breast changes or tissue loss. Depending on your individual needs, reconstruction may involve implants, tissue expanders, or advanced techniques using your own tissue.

At Revitalize in Turkey, every breast reconstruction procedure is carefully planned around your medical history, anatomy, and desired outcome. SUITABILITY

Are you a candidate for breast implants?

A breast reconstruction procedure may be right for you if you:

  • Have undergone or are planning to undergo a mastectomy due to breast cancer or another medical condition

  • Would like to restore breast shape, volume, and symmetry following breast tissue loss or changes

  • Want to improve balance and confidence after surgery, injury, or other conditions affecting the breast

  • Are in good general health and a non-smoker, or able to stop smoking before surgery

  • Are close to your ideal weight and able to maintain a stable weight after surgery

  • Have realistic expectations about the reconstruction process, results, and recovery

Candidacy is always confirmed after a medical review of your medical history, previous treatments, photos, and goals. Your surgeon will recommend the most suitable reconstruction approach, which may involve implants, tissue expanders, or other techniques depending on your anatomy and individual needs.

RECOVERY

Breast reconstruction recovery timeline

Days 1–3: Rest with your upper body slightly elevated to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Mild tightness, swelling, and bruising are expected during this period, and your dressings and any drains (if used) will be monitored by our nursing team. You may also be advised to wear a supportive surgical bra or compression garment as recommended by your surgeon.

Days 4–7: If drains have been placed, they are usually removed during this period. You will gradually become more comfortable with light daily activities while continuing your recovery plan. Most patients are able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.

Weeks 2–6: Swelling continues to improve, and your reconstructed breast shape begins to settle. You can gradually return to normal daily activities, but heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and upper body workouts should be avoided until your surgeon confirms it is safe to resume them.

Months 3–6: Your breasts continue to soften and develop a more natural appearance as healing progresses. Any remaining swelling gradually resolves, and your final results become clearer. Maintaining a stable weight and following your surgeon’s aftercare advice will help support long-lasting results.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

Breast reconstruction is a specialised surgery, but like any operation, it carries potential risks, which we discuss openly during your consultation. These can include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma), delayed wound healing, changes in breast or nipple sensation, scarring, asymmetry, and — more rarely — bleeding, infection, implant-related complications, or the need for further corrective procedures.

We minimise these risks by performing a comprehensive pre-operative health assessment, carefully planning the most suitable reconstructive approach, using meticulous surgical techniques, and providing structured aftercare with 24/7 access to our medical team throughout your stay. Your surgeon will explain your individual risk profile in detail and provide personalised guidance to support a safe recovery.

ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to restore the shape, volume, and appearance of the breast following a mastectomy, breast cancer treatment, injury, or other conditions that have affected the breast tissue. The aim is to recreate a natural-looking breast shape while improving symmetry and helping restore confidence.

Who is a good candidate for breast reconstruction?

You may be a suitable candidate if you have undergone or are planning to undergo a mastectomy or have experienced breast tissue loss due to medical reasons. Suitability depends on your overall health, medical history, previous treatments, anatomy, and personal goals.

What techniques are used for breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction can be performed using different techniques depending on your individual needs. Options may include implant-based reconstruction, tissue expanders, or reconstruction using your own tissue (flap procedures). Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate approach after assessing your anatomy and treatment history.

Can breast reconstruction be performed after a mastectomy?

Yes. Breast reconstruction can often be performed either at the same time as a mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later stage (delayed reconstruction), depending on your medical situation and treatment plan.

Will the reconstructed breast look natural?

Modern breast reconstruction techniques aim to create a natural-looking breast shape that complements your body proportions. The final appearance depends on factors such as your anatomy, the reconstruction method used, healing, and any additional procedures that may be required.

Will breast reconstruction restore sensation?

Breast reconstruction can restore the appearance of the breast, but sensation may not fully return to the same level as before surgery. Some patients experience gradual improvements in sensation over time, while others may have permanent changes.

How long does recovery take after breast reconstruction?

Recovery varies depending on the type and complexity of reconstruction performed. Most patients can return to light daily activities within a few weeks, while swelling and healing continue over several months. Your surgeon will provide personalised guidance based on your procedure.

How long should I stay in Turkey for breast reconstruction?

The recommended stay depends on the complexity of your reconstruction and your surgeon’s assessment. Many patients require a longer stay and follow-up period compared with cosmetic breast procedures to ensure proper monitoring during the early recovery phase.

Will I have scars after breast reconstruction?

Scarring is a natural part of the healing process. The location and appearance of scars depend on the reconstruction technique used and your individual healing. Over time, scars usually fade and become less noticeable.

Can breast reconstruction be combined with other procedures?

In some cases, additional procedures may be recommended to improve symmetry or achieve a balanced result. These may include breast reshaping procedures on the opposite breast or revision procedures, depending on your individual needs.
