What are cataracts?

Who is a suitable candidate for cataract surgery?

What type of lens will I receive?
A standard monofocal lens restores clear distance vision, although glasses may still be needed for reading. Premium multifocal, trifocal, or toric lenses may also be available for suitable patients who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses.
Is cataract surgery painful?
No. Cataract surgery is performed under local anaesthetic eye drops and is generally painless. You may feel slight pressure during the procedure and mild irritation afterwards, which usually settles within a few days.
How long does the procedure take?
Cataract surgery usually takes around 15–30 minutes per eye and is performed as a day-case procedure, allowing you to return to your accommodation shortly afterwards.
How soon will my vision improve?

Can cataracts come back after surgery?
No. Once the cloudy natural lens has been removed, cataracts cannot return. Some patients may develop a clouding of the membrane behind the new lens (posterior capsule opacification), which can be quickly and painlessly treated with a YAG laser.
Can both eyes be treated?
Yes. If both eyes require treatment, they are usually operated on separately, often within a few days of each other, to ensure the first eye is healing well before the second procedure.
How long does the artificial lens last?
Artificial intraocular lenses are designed to last a lifetime and do not usually need to be replaced.
